I was in the Communications School at UT. I was an RTF major, not a communications major, but close enough in the grand scheme of things. Towards my senior year I was scratching my head wondering if this would lead to a real job. It all worked out and I've had the opportunity to have lucrative positions in advertising and now work as a marketing consultant at a firm that's been around for almost 25 years. Most of my college buddies went on to work in advertising (where you can make a load of money) or land production jobs in television and film in LA.
It's not all that different from other majors in the sense that you need to bust your ass in your internships, build a reputation for yourself and network like .
Um... not quite. If you're drinking throughout the week specifically to keep yourself from going out of control on the weekends, that would still indicate a dependence on alcohol.
I think your underlying point is that drinking in moderation, even on weekdays, is healthier than regular/frequent periods of boorish drunkenness, even if only on weekends. And, if that's what you were getting at, I would generally agree.
Ask any ex-NCAA basketball player that hasn't been drafted and isn't playing ball for anyone.
What college do you go to?
If you want to get into broadcasting i'd suggest specifying your major. For instance, at Texas State we have the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In that school, there's advertising, public relations, journalism and electronic media. I don't know how other schools work and if they have that option or it's just general comm. studies.
But, electronic media is definitely the way to go if video production, broadcasting, radio, tv or any of those are what you want to go into.

All the posts in here about getting drunk and/or high before class, regularly, and the evils of Nazi professors who actually require regular attendance lead me to the realization (re-realization, really) that we need to get back to a structure in which someone could skip college, without fear of embarrassment or any other negative social stigma, and still get a decent job with a decent wage. Students who aren't interested enough their education, beyond just the degree, to attend classes regularly (and sober) clearly don't want to be there. Which, for the record, is okay. Understandable, even, since that's the type of student I was at 18. It just has become an unnecessary, and often frustrating, stop for everyone who aspires to more than fry jockey or barista.
Because it's a subject that interests you? Or because it will lead to something else down the road?
Forced attendance is lame; sometimes attendance can be an enormous waste of time. For instance, my first quarter numerical analysis class was completely worthless to go to. The subject material is fascinating, and my time was much better spent in bed reading a numerical analysis book I checked out from the library and doing proofs from it on my own over sitting in class for an hour and listening to the professor spend the whole time describing something incredibly simple like the bisection method for finding roots (yes, he spent an entire hour on something anyone with any mathematical skill could write down in his notes in 3 minutes). I gave the guy a couple of more chances, and the next two lectures were just as bad. It would have really pissed me off to have to attend that thing three times a week when I was getting absolutely nothing out of it. Staying home and studying it on my own from a harder textbook got me an easy A+ and prepared me for the exams much better than attending class ever would have.
Oh, I've definitely had classes like that. A general ed stats class about three years ago comes immediately to mind -- absolutely no reason to attend the Mon/Wed lectures other than to sign the attendance sheet. However, I've always seen that as a problem with the professor's teaching style, rather than their attendance requirements. Demanding that your students attend class regularly is reasonable, dumbing down a lecture and/or doing little more than regurgitating the text isn't.
Every drunk eventually ends up in an AA meeting going, "I guess the point where I really should have realized that I had a problem was..." When BUMP gets there, he can refer back to this thread.

Well that's a first for me to hear. Every UT RTF major I know either works at Dell, Apple, or for the Alamo Drafthouse.

Further, the BA is so diluted now - and high school educations so much worse than they were, say, even 50 years ago - that it's often not enough to be more than a fry jockey or barista, especially in this economy.
I really ought to get a masters degree to secure my future employment - but it doesn't even matter in what field at this point, because master's degrees are beginning to be diluted because of the glut of post-grad students, thanks again to the economy and the difficulties of finding a job immediately out of college.
But, practically, I kind of hope it doesn't happen, because we need students. Despite record enrollment, our state $ has already been slashed and looks to be again for next fiscal year. I've no idea where the next round of cuts will come from, as we've already begun eliminating positions (since we are not allowed to cut teaching funds - for good/obvious reasons).
Not true. I did not attend college for an MRS (and in fact, despite being married, am not an Mrs. - It's Ms.), and I had no intention of working in a history-related field. I just really enjoyed studying it. I did and do find history fascinating.
I did switch out from a theatre degree, though, when I realized I had no intention of continuing in theatre.
all cooks would lose their jobs if everyone cooks themselves. education used to be good when the kids could actually learn something meaningful from schools, but today education is more about the degree than the conventional method of teaching.
My favorite professor, whom I adored, used to point out the contradiction near the end of his life, using an especially illustrative true story. When he began teaching at my school in the early 70's he had 14 books on his syllabus (for an introductory American government class). He was pulled aside and told that he was perhaps not being rigorous enough, and should re-examine his workload.
In his last two years or so, he had the same syllabus, with the same number of books, and was pulled aside and told that he ought to consider reducing the booklist and re-examine his workload because it was too much to expect students to be able to read that many books in an introductory American government course.
you cant make that comparison though because with the advent of computers and technology, professors regulary assign online readings and videos to watch as well.
