    Project Spurs Poll result: Who was the Spurs' 2009-2010 MVP?
    Written by Jeff Garcia
    Wednesday, 22 September 2010 06:00

    Throughout the San Antonio Spurs' 2009-2010 season we here at Project Spurs left a poll question for most of the season asking who was the season MVP -- Tim Duncan or Manu Ginobili?

    The debate ran the spectrum of arguments with Spurs fans settling on Duncan being the seasons' first-half MVP and Ginobili being the seasons' second-half MVP.

    Duncan started off strong when the team came out of the gates slow. Putting up solid numbers despite being considered "over the hill" for NBA standards. However, in the second half of the season, he slowed down.

    Ginobili's season was the opposite. After starting off the season slow, battling injuries and recovering from ankle surgery, he fought back after the All-Star break and went on a tear.

    Hard to argue for just one of them because without both the Spurs probably would not have won 50 games and make it past the first round of the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.

    But in the end, the poll question asked for fans to pick one.

    Well the fans spoke out and voted on who was the MVP for the Spurs for the 2009-2010 season.

    After 399 votes, the fans voted for .

    Both Manu and Duncan were just as valuable. Unfortunately, Duncan carried us through the first quarter of the season which ultimately wore him down while Manu was atrocious until February last year where he miraculously turned into the old Manu and gave us one of the best Spur performances of all time. The real MVP could have even been George Hill.

    Duncan. No question. We don't even make the playoffs without his first half play.

    Easily Manu.. He was on fire in the 2nd half of the season. There wasn't a 2guard in the NBA that played better than him when he was on his tear last season bar none.. Not Kobe, Durant, Wade.....

    He did? I would have to go back and look at the boxscores, but I recall him being his usual self (about 18/10, his average). I recall Tony having some extraordinary games until he went down, but overall the team was pretty inconsistent (Bonner and RJ being top scorers in a couple of games, IIRC) and I thought the record kinda reflected that then (11-9 through the first 20 games).

    Don't get me wrong, it's easy to take for granted Tim's 18/10... but what I'm saying is that I didn't think he was superlative like he was in the first quarter of the season in 08-09 when both TP and Manu were out.

    Are you crazy? Tim absolutely balled before the All-Star break. It just was not his stats, but the way he did everything.

    Maybe I should take another look at the games. I believe you. Sometimes stats don't paint the whole picture.

    It seems like Duncan has been playing better in the first half of the season for the past few years now; I suppose the marathon known as the NBA season really affects him in the second half

    Anyway the MVP for the Spurs was easily Ginobili. While he struggled to find his shooting touch and getting back in a NBA rhythm in the first half of the season, his other boxscore stats and intangibles made up for it. Especially his leadership, Ginobili seemed like the real PG out there as he forged chemistry with the new Spurs and integrated them quickly on the court. Ginobili took Blair under his wing as his Oberto 2.0 and RJ seems to play better with Manu as well.

    Duncan = 1st half MVP
    Manu = 2nd half MVP

    I cant pick who was the overall MVP because they both helped this team make the playoffs.

    Yeah two distinct parts of the season with one player being clearly the best in each.

    Duncan started being the best but if you look carefully it's not like he was playing unusually well. It was more a mater of injuries to Manu and Tony plus too many time for new guys to start playing well. By then Duncan was the constant on that team, his consistency was the one thing granted because overall the team was playing really bad and it showed on our record in the easiest part of the schedule.

    Then came the second part, Manu started playing well and when Tony got injured he was forced to carry the team in the toughest part of the schedule against +0.5 teams and contenders with a lot of games on the road. But again the main problem was the team wasn't good enough, one game they choose to rest Manu and they loose against the Nets. Even worse all the back to backs they were planning to rest Duncan he had to play.

    We can debate who the MVP was but one thing is sure, at this point in their careers if the Spurs have a clear best player above all others it's a very bad sign for the team.
