Agreed. There's no sense in completely destroying another kid's entire future (even if that kid did a really, really, really stupid and cruel thing). But a few months in county, a felony record and a lengthy probationary period sounds about right. Was the roommate a piece of ? Yes. Should be get punished for invasion of privacy? Yes. But prosecute him for murder or as an accessory for a grown man's decision to kill himself? No.
If nothing else, there needs to be a cyberbullying case that ends with a meaningful warning to others. As this is so high profile, it serves as a good example of what not to do.

We need the Mark Jackson troll up in here.
Yeah no kidding. Same thing with that 13 year old who killed himself because of bullying. Why not kill off the prick who is causing you to commit suicide before committing suicide?
2 wrongs != right.
Lefty:"no, but three lefts make a right!"
Apparently, the deceased guy ASKED and got permission to have the room until midnight on at least two occassions. I think the roommate was freaked that gay sex was happening in his bed. How does this change things? The deceased guy wasn't being a jerk about it, he asked permission...and the roommate put it on iCHAT. Not THAT big of a deal unless some creep recorded it and tried to blackmail. But yea, I definately think this was bigger than streaming his sexual encounters.
The asshole should be prosecuted for stalking and invasion of privacy, but as incredibly mean as this was, he is not responsible for this kid taking his own life. What would motivate you to record gay sex anyway? Sound like the little punk may have been hiding his own sexuality.
I knew that this would come up eventually.
But apparently it is THAT big of a deal. From the article:
"Under New Jersey's invasion-of-privacy statutes, it is a fourth degree crime to collect or view images depicting nudity or sexual contact involving another individual without that person's consent, and it is a third degree crime to transmit or distribute such images. The penalty for conviction of a third degree offense can include a prison term of up to five years"
That is what he is potentially being punished for, not anything to do with being resposible for the kid's death.
ed up. I've heard he can get 5 years maximum, but I hope they somehow get him to do a lot more.
Agree with many. Completely ty thing to do by his roommate. But the kid committing suicide is on himself. People get humiliated everyday to varying degrees. If you choose to kill yourself over humiliation, in my opinion, that's more on you than on anyone who humiliated you.
As a side, we're going to see more and more bad things to come from technological advances like youtube and facebook and the like. I think it's just the tip of the iceberg. I gotta believe criminals share ideas and experiences online already. I wouldn't be surprised if hate groups have videotaped and broadcasted beatings or even murders. I've seen a few episodes on Law & Order with cases of murders or sex crimes that were directly or indirectly related to the internet and sharing aspects of the crime on the internet.
I can see how a dimwit who didn't particularly care for his roommate could see that as an elaborate prank. Ridiculously invasive and explicitly wrong, but I can see how he wouldn't have had any idea that it would lead to this kid's suicide.
And yes, I suspect there were other issues involved here, probably undiagnoses/untreated depression.
And yes, the roommate should be prosecuted for recording and transmission of this material and breach of privacy etc to the fullest extent of the law - which happens to be a maximum of 5 years in prison if convicted. Unlikely to get so much time, but, yeah, some seems appropriate for the laws he violated and not quite enough time for his share of responsibility in contributing to this kid's decision to off himself.
Why would you post a gay sex video? That should be private.
The guy who made the video is a dumb moron and so is the dead kid. Killed himself cause he was in the gay video. Just great. Tomorrow some 12 year old will kill himself cause he wasn't allowed to watch the TV. This is just stupid.
Does prison really ever fix anything other than get the convicted off the streets?
OK, we all agree this went beyond an innocent roommate prank....but how many of you have ever had a roommate you couldn't stand? I lived in the dorm my first year in college and had a real turd for a roommate the first semester...but he HATED me...he was a virgin and couldn't get laid to save his ass and I was always kicking him out of the room...best prank I pulled on him was after picking up this hottie at a bar when he was home for the weekend...she was really nice to look at but had some definite feminine hygiene issues...not bad enough to throw her out, but definitely an issue...I grabbed my roommates pillow and put it under her ass so she could get her knees over my shoulders and I could have some leverage (also to keep her from dripping on my sheets LOL) After she left I just put his pillow back on his bed...LMAO That ing pillow REEKED. He came back Sunday night and sat down on his bed and was like *sniff*.....*sniff* sniff*....he's looking all around...I'm hiding under my blankets trying not to laugh...he finally gets his nose down on his bed and starts "sniff"sniff"sniffing" around...picks his pillow up and buries his nose in it and give it a couple of "SNIFF*SNIFF*'s...he was like EEEEUW WTF happened to my pillow? He finally ended up ,throwing it away...

You were a horrible roommate.
I was a GREAT roommate. Just not for him.
She could leave a pillow reeking? So at what point would her hygiene issues be bad enough to throw her out??![]()
And you still had sex with her?
...I actually considered it but horniness won out...like I said, she was really hot looking but the smell was definitely noticeable...you know what they say about bar pickups being like a box of chocolates...plus she was really wet and the pillow got pretty wet...
I think perhaps "reek" was the wrong word to illustrate his point, unless the after-sex puddle isn't supposed to smell like anything. Certainly shouldn't reek, but I can understand how someone who hasn't been near a vagina would be grossed out by the smell of dried feminine juices.
