Browsed it in the store.

It is one of those interestings looks at history and modern trends. A bit like Freakonomics and some similar books. Wish I had the time to read it.

There is a chapter in there about Jewish immigrants who came to the United States with a knowledge of industry from working in factories throughout Europe.

The premise of the chapter is that this knowledge allowed this early generation of Jewish immigrants to do more than just support their families through physical labor...it allowed them to act as a foundation for their children, who experienced their parents entrepeneurial endeavevors from the youngest of ages, and who eventually far outpaced other ethnic groups in becoming professionals in the next generation.

This point parallels the premise of the book, which is that a small head start grows into a larger and larger advantage over time.

Another chapter explains how Chinese as a primary language make mathematics easier for kids.

Another talks about the advantage the Beatles had playing set after set in Hamburg brothels.

Another talks about the advantage that Bill Gates had with free time working on a mainframe as a teenager in Washington state.

Another talks about the advantage kids in Canada who are born in January have when it comes to hockey.

Interesting stuff.

It was picked up by TLC and is probably one of my next DVD purchases. Great stuff to watch with my 7 year old, with lots of science and history.

He's such a coconut, can't even pronounce his own last name correctly. He's exploited his culture and tried to pass himself off as something he's not, the only reason the news bosses don't like him is that he's an awkward mix of tones from an anchor standpoint. He can argue about racism, but everyone knows his failed attempts to make Hispanics comsumable to CNN's audience aren't the result of Jews controlling his ty news show...it's cuz he's the Uncle Tom of Spanish people - Tio Pablo, mutha a!

In the manner in which Sanchez spoke, also, there was something like a buried resentment. He didn't descend into saying that there was Jewish control of the media, but he did imply that liberalism was linked to a single ethnicity. Still, there is nothing criminal about this, and the speed of his firing, like the other recent abrupt disappearances of Laura Schlessinger and Octavia Nasr, seems to suggest a network system that cares only about playing safe and avoiding "offense."
