    Ouch.

I'm not sure how to respond. I'm mixed about it. however, if a community allows free services that everyone else pays for, then everyone will stop paying.

Sorry that they had to be that example, but happens.

Outside of the fact that you have to pay a fee to not have insurance.

I think it is overwhelmingly stupid and pretty evil to let someones house burn down over a $75 dollar fee. Although I agree that he should have paid his fee, anyone siding with the fire department on this one (when they came to put out the neighbors house anyway) has to be an insensitive piece of . It's an annual fee. I can see someone having it slip their mind. This guy lost everything he owned for $75 ing dollars and some of you make it sound like he got what he deserved. No wonder I dislike most people.

I agree with the president of the association. Whether the fee was paid or not, they should have put out the fire. Then charged him double the annual fee, or have a collection agency collect the $75 after the fact.

Eh, there's no good answer for this one.

Obviously the guy didn't deserve to lose everything, including three pets, because he chose not to pay the $75. Especially since he apparently offered to pay it if they would agree to put his fire out.

That being said, when you have the option to pay for having fire service, or having nothing, then you've got to take that into consideration when you choose not to pay. Like people have said, you can't start an insurance policy on a car AFTER you've wrecked it, and hope for the insurance company to cover it.

I find it strange that the fire department isn't county-funded or whatever, but if that's what it takes for them to run, them's the breaks. They can't just make some people pay and let others get free service, and they can't wait for people's houses to start burning down to collect their $75. Otherwise they wouldn't be a fire department at all because they'd be bankrupt.

Still, pretty lame to use this guy's life to set an example for people.

True. But by the same token, they are there to provide a service and protect the people. It's like a cop not stopping a crime because he's off duty and not getting paid. Or those paramedics not saving the woman because they were on lunch.

They may have not been getting paid, but courtesy for a fellow man has to take over at that point. Charge him later and make sure to get the money be it by collection agency or not. And also offer a warning that it would be the one exception they would make for him. Then send out notices to others offering a chance to buy into the fire service, and use this story as an example.

Yes, but if it was expected to do the service for free, then everyone would stop paying, and there would then likely be no fire department.

Pretty stupid not to pay the fee if you ask me.

Yeah, greed is really the common denominator here, whether by necessity or not. The man thought he was saving a buck by not paying the fee. The fire company obviously didn't put out the fire to show people "this is what happens when you don't pay your fee". A man shouldn't have to lose his worldly possessions just for them to get that point across.

My mother's house is located outside the city limits and they have a VFD that services their area. They have to pay a fee each year as well but if they choose to turn it down they will still get their fire put out. However, they will receive a much higher bill. Think 50 dollar fee 2000 dollar fee.

Seems like a much better situation. People should not act like the only options are either let it burn or get paid the 75 dollars because its not very hard to come up with a solution like the one above.

You have to be a total asshole to let someone's house burn down over 75 dollars.

I don't think the dude who had a hard time remembering to pay $75 would be willing to remember he has to pay $2000-3000.

I think that's the best solution overall. Pay a small(ish) fee now or a bigger fee later. But we'll still try to save your house.

so now we're paying for fire services?

    What's next?

Police fee? What the is the point of taxes, then? This is the entire reasoning behind the existence of the IRS. The US government operated for 150 years without the IRS and taxes, so if they won't be providing services, then we should be able to stop paying taxes.

This is just as bad as not receiving proper medical care because you can't afford it.

Humanity and morality has lost it's ing way. We're a generation of depraved, lost, immoral souls.

They need a $5000 fine for calling the fire department if you didn't pay the fee. That way the fire still gets put out. Would the firefighters have just let the guy's family burn to death if there were people in there?

If a sports message board could solve this problem within 8 hours, I really have to wonder who the is in charge of that county / fire department.
