Actually, there was a paper trail in the form of coupons with codes that determined who could vote. The encryption of the votes themselves was not compromised either (unlike that article claims). However, you could generate dummy votes once the system was compromised (which wouldn't necessarily clear against the paper trail, if verified).
It was a test and outsiders were granted access to test the security, and now that exploits have been found, more time is needed, and a better design can take place. Security is an iterative process. I'm more concerned about the security measures taken to protect the private key on the building that's supposed to count the votes, but it's something that has not been covered in the articles I've read about the case.

BTW, for the tech savvy, the system used a GPG PK system, with the private key on the remote vote counting place (not connected to the network), while the voting machine had the public key used to encrypt the messages.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we're talking about two (somewhat) unrelated cases...

At least the OP is about strictly NY voters, the other one is about a pilot program that was going to be used in general if it passed scrutiny (which it did not at this time).
