Boy there were both pretty bad.

Even though Neal hit a clutch shot to win the game, I still don't know if he's worth burning a roster spot for - especially now that Pop has announced they're only going to carry no more than 14.
Maybe he'll be buried at the end of the bench as a glue guy. Everyone was genuinely happy to see him hit that shot. TBH, Temple hasn't shown to be that much superior to him so far.

Neal will be the Roger Mason of this season - complete with similar defensive deficiencies.

As for Temple, I don't understand what's going on with him either. I believe he could seriously be on the bubble. CJ clearly outplayed him at the backup PG spot tonight.

I wish we could've seen more of Gist. I did like him stepping in to take the charge.

But HH is correct. The Spurs so desperately need 3 PT shooters, and they have such little options, that one of, if not both of Neal & Simmons almost has to be kept.
Simmons probably isn't as good a shooter as Neal, but boy does he have size. Pop is probably drooling at the thought of him playing the small-ball 4 spot.

i thought CJ was a lock to be waived, but he has been playing really well.

Unfortunately that can't be said about Temple.

Preseason: San Antonio Spurs 100, Los Angeles Clippers 99
    by Andrew A. McNeill
    48 Minutes of

To be honest, there’s not a whole lot to say about a preseason game in a foreign country. This game lacked energy in the beginning, at least from San Antonio’s end, but actually became pretty entertaining as we got into the second half. But since there weren’t a whole lot of takeaways from this one, we’ll go over it bullet style.

Unfortunately, those clutch shots by Neal and Simmons will overshadow how terrible they both are..

Remember, even Jefferson made some clutch shots during the season last year..
Yes, we wouldn't want to give anyone credit for something they did.

No matter how much RJ sucked last year (and he did to the point that I don't think most posters remember any clutch shots from him) if he hadn't hit those shots then the Spurs 50 wins season streak would have ended.

Wouldn't that have been great if the spurs dropped their streak so there would be no one who could say anything good about Richard Jefferson? He's such an asshole for helping our favorite team in any small way.

The danger is giving them too much credit for making one basket. See your posts for an example.

Kind of like giving Gee credit for having long arms? I may err on the side of being overly impressed by intelligent play (even when the player doesn't have the tools to accomplish what he's attempting every time), but I'd rather do that then make blind guesses on players being better for the team based on their ability to jump.

And the only player I've really defended has been Bobby Simmons. I think he's the Spurs best available option for the back up SF. I haven't really said anything about the way Gary Neal plays, and I've expressed both optimism, and frustration with Richard Jefferson.

More than defending players with blind optimism I've been critical of long-time posters who have become cynical of any new players above the age of 25, and arrogant towards fans with a "sunny disposition." I get that people who just want to scream "go spurs go! we're the best!" probably don't have as much basketball knowledge as posters like yourself, but I don't see the point in treating them like trolls who need their peppy spirits crushed on a site built for San Antonio Spurs fans.

I'm critical of style, and offer counter opinions when I'm skeptical of someone's viewpoint, but I think some of the "veteran" ST posters have gone too far in their pursuit of "raising the bar." There is no reason to make every post/thread created an attempt to convince people that any negative opinions of the team should be more important than positive ones.

Does Gee have long arms? Well, regardless ... Yes, giving Simmons or Neal credit for hitting one basket is akin to giving a guy credit for having long arms when he hasn't done . Harlem's right. They're both going to get too much credit for their play just because they hit a shot at the end of the game, and your defense of them just proves it further. I don't need to see your ing resume to know that, I simply judged your post on its content.

As did I his. And like I said, I'm only giving credit based on what I've seen of Simmons, but if that's too much for you guys then so be it. I'll live.

Even though this conversation is dead, I can't help correcting myself on one point. I did not judge benefactor's comment based solely on his one post. The post bothered me so I probably could have, but I definitely reacted more strongly due to the way I view some of his posting lately.

But, I'd also like to say that you did not judge me on the content of a single post either.

    Unless that was a typo.

If your only retort is to split hairs then we have nothing else to talk about. The content of that single post completely encapsulated your sudden crush on players because they hit a single basket with a blind eye turned to everything else they may have done wrong in the game.

I mistakenly assumed you'd said something similar earlier in the conversation, but that was someone else who thinks Gary Neal is a great shooter because he had one good shooting day in summer league and that hitting a single shot against the Clippers confirms that reality.

I'm not over here jerking off to preseason games, man. And "splitting hairs" or not I was right, and even called myself out for the mistake first.

I really don't feel I've acted as though I'm in love with any of the players you, or benefactor dislike. Again, I just feel its unfair to not give players credit for the things they do well if their flaws are going to be broadcast so thoroughly. If a player has 8 bad qualities, and 2 good ones then comments shouldn't strip them of their 2 good ones just to make sure everyone knows the bad ones. Both good and bad attributes can be accounted for, no matter the ratio.

If others are not giving credit where credit is due, no matter how small the amount, then other posters have the right to provide a positive counterbalance, just like some provide a negative one for the posters who believe anyone in a Spurs uniform is a world beater. Honestly, I really do try to acknowledge good and bad points of each players game.
