how about refs just officiate the game how the international rules stipulate and not just create a league based upon rules purely to create entertainment before sport. if a sport is good enough, it will attract a mammoth fan base.
Union to contest officiating crackdown

The Players Association plans to contest the NBA’s efforts to curb player complaints about the league’s officiating, union executive director Billy Hunter said Thursday.
“The new unilateral rule changes are an unnecessary and unwarranted overreaction on the league’s behalf,” Hunter said in a statement. “We have not seen any increase in the level of ‘complaining’ to the officials, and we believe that players as a whole have demonstrated appropriate behavior toward the officials.
“Worse yet, to the extent the harsher treatment from the referees leads to a stifling of the players’ passion and exuberance for their work, we fear these changes may actually harm our product. The changes were made without proper consultation with the Players Association, and we intend to file an appropriate legal challenge.”
NBA commissioner David Stern said the league’s market research shows fans want to see a decrease in the on-court complaints and demonstrations by players. Stern has instructed the league’s referees to give players technical fouls for lingering too long to complain or making an overt gesture, including punching the air.
On Wednesday in New York, Boston Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal drew his second technical in two nights for moderately reacting to a referee’s foul call. Kevin Garnett was given a technical moments later for trying to show an official how a New York Knicks player had hit him, and was then ejected for laughing over the legitimacy of that technical.

Why does the NFL and the NBA think that player celebrations or emotional outbursts are such a bad thing?
This sort of rules is going to fuel resentment, because you're going to have players bottling up emotion/frustration instead of letting it out. It increases the chance for another Malice at the Palace type event, IMO.
As usual with officiating the problem lies in treating the same situation differently according to the player.
If they gave deserved technical to guys like Kobe Bryant when he es non stop when he doesn't get a call or Duncan with his "who me" routine you would see a significant drop in complaints but still allowing natural reactions after a play.
With this rule they are calling every reaction and anyone who has played a compe ive sport before knows that those are natural and don't intend disrespect towards the refs or the fans and in a way make the game more interesting showing passion and compe ive spirit from the players.
In any case I think they are being intentionally over zealous with this rule in the pre season games in hopes that it will lead to less complaints but I don't believe they are calling it like this during the season.

Yeah, I saw when KG got ejected ... was turble. Man, many superstars are going to get axed and people wanna see the best players on the floor as much as possible.
yeah, we will see Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Chris Paul etc all out of games by halftime
