SamAmicoNBA: Blazers are on team that really likes Andy Varejao. Rockets another. Spurs too. But especially Blazers.

I don't find it as ridiculous as the OP, I'd take him over the likes of McDyess (McDyess is too old and wouldn't contribute as much nowadays) or Bonner and he's been a teammate of Tiago's. He'd be good off the bench but doesn't really have a jumpshot.

Can he stand out by the 3 point line and miss them when they count and get no rebounds?

varejao reminds me of oberto but he's much younger than when oberto was on the spurs. limited offense, tries very hard on offense and defense, decent lateral quickness, and rebounds. don't really care about the salary if the spurs are still loading up for the final run. with varejao, the spurs would have three good big defenders to throw at the west's bigs.

if the spurs think their window is already closed, then forget it but i don't think they've made that decision yet.

This is worse than the chandler rumour...Who exactly would they trade for Varejao?

I think the only salary that matches is RJ's.

That would be a terrible trade.

McDyess + Bonner works, but I can't see Cleveland taking that.

Varejao is one of the best defensive bigs in basketball. He's a great defensive player. His contract isn't bad. But it's hard to see how his contract numbers fit long term, unless Byron Scott is getting sentimental about RJ.

that would leave the spurs with 3 bigs that basically can't score outside of the restricted area. That is unless the feel Simmons defensive work at the 4 is adequate enough to have him take over Bonner's role as a 3pt shooting PF.

I'd take him in a second over McDyess and Bonner. Duncan/Blair and Splitter/Varejao would be a nice frontcourt. We'd just have no backup if one of them went down (which is already a problem).

Sideshow Bob is a perfect fit in San Antonio. You'd have a two Brazilians next to an Argie and Frenchman. Now all you have to do is get Barbosa and Bargnani for your All International team.

Contract aside, I think he is an absolutely perfect fit for the team. Contract taken into consideration.... meh.

And why would Cleveland want McDyess and Bonner ?

They are rebuilding. They would want some young players I think.
They would want someting like McDyess (just for the expiring contract and salary match) + Blair.

So do you give up Blair for more D ?
    I wouldn't do the trade.

Why wouldn't they want Bonner, a good mentor for the young blokes and a great great rebounder

i watched every Brazilian FIBA game to see Splitter play, Sideshow Bob helped on the boards no doubt, but made horrible basketball decisions and on average, turned the ball over more than Barbosa did, not good. Splitter is already the better basketball player and the combo of DICE and BONNER are a much safer choice.

Only if Pop already saw enough of Splitter and he's being traded with Dice for Varejao. Bonner and RJ can't be traded.

Varejao has a 20% trade kicker in his contract. Dice knows the system and knows how to play in playoffs. Splitter is clearly more talented than Varejao.

That's not very credible, the Spurs need a wing defender.
