Just from the start I would say that Google looks better than Apple, but who knows? These days a product could debut and be crap then through updates, third party developers, etc bring itself neck and neck with what is considered the cream of the crop (see the nook's debut last year and how it measures up with the kindle this year). With that being said I still think Google TV is coming out of the gate a better system and due to its open source-ness, I think it has a far greater chance of having cool stuff developed for it.

What it really boils down to is find out what the nerds are buying, and even if it isn't the industry leader at the moment, buy it and just wait for all of that developer mana to fall from internet heaven.

If your computer and TV are in the same room, I recommend running a VGA/DVI cable along the baseboard and save yourself $200.

That being said, I'm not very impressed with the new AppleTV. They took out the hard drive, so everything must be streamed through iTunes now, which can be laggy sometimes. That also means you are limited to only the music and video file types that iTunes supports (aka no AVI). You also have to control all of your content through iTunes, which can be a pain if it is not your preferred media player.

With a little know how, you can really set up your 360 (or PS3 or Wii, im pretty sure) to perform pretty much the same function. If you have a Mac, there is a product called Rivet which allows you to stream music/video to a 360.

I don't know much about the GoogleTV, so here is a picture of a dog in a beanie instead:

Google TV is intended to be a cable replacement. AppleTV is not necessarily, since it is limited to Netflix and iTunes content. However, it has already been hacked and they may open it up for apps like VLC that do play other file types streamed from your computer. Right now it's fairly vanilla, but if it were hacked it might have great potential:

Given its $99 price point it could turn out to be a very nice product, especially with the ability to push video, music and whatnot from your Touch or iPhone (assuming you have one). If they enabled it for AirVideo I would buy it. This is also an interesting article about AirPlay:

tbh, i would be more inclined for Google TV because it integrates with my DVR, but I would wait for a cheaper second generation that's been more battle tested. I also don't think either can do something as simple as playing xvid/mkv movies off a network share.

    o god nooo!

drachen are you using good incognito? I was and I could not open it either. Till I opened it with regular google or IE

Here's a paste from what I read on the link:

In all seriousness, I laughed to myself when I read the le for this article when I came across it. Once I viewed the source, I quickly shut the up and started taking it seriously. Although this is just a rumour and more or less just analyst speculation; there's a good chance that the position of power in terms of the video game industry will drastically change if this goes down.

Apple has been racking in the dough for quite some time now. They're estimated to have 51 billion dollars of crisp cash to blow with zero debt as well. They have been pulling in billions of dollars quarter after quarter so I'm sure all that money is starting to burn a significant hole in their collective pockets. So what do you do with 51 big tymer bills in the bank? Why not go on a shopping spree. Apple has been getting seriously involved in the gaming scene offering mostly casual games for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. With the potential acquisition of EA and Sony they'll have a huge impact on the gaming industry and could position themselves at the top of the list in a short amount of time. EA is the second biggest game publisher and we all know what Sony has to offer in terms of their existing client base with a huge hand in the hardware game.

Apple, or Jobs more specifically, did not comment directly as to what their short or long term plans are relating to their excessive cash positioning but that didn't stop the New York Times from chiming in on the subject. At Apple's press conference last week, Jobs went on to make the following statement that got everyone up in Wall Street in a tizzy:

We’d like to continue to keep our powder dry because we do feel that there are one or more strategic opportunities in the future,

Kaufman Brothers have gone as far as to link EA, Netflix and even Facebook as potential acquisition targets.

Leading financial magazine Barron's is reportedly suggesting that Apple faces "speculation that it could acquire Adobe Systems, Sony, or even Walt Disney".

There are also some investors that just don't see the point. Take into consideration the purchase of Netflix. iTunes already has 160 million accounts. Netflix would just be a drop in the bucket with their 15 million current subscribers in comparison. Apple has also done extremely well entering new markets on its own so they don't exactly need to make any of these acquisition to remain compe ive or expand. But man wouldn't that be something. The biggest and smartest move would probably be picking up Facebook due to it's 500 million subscribers and the robust advertising ecosystem that comes along with it.

If you're interested in reading the entire article I suggest you check it out over at the NY Times site. I wish I had Apple money... What would you guys "acquire" with 51 billion bucks in the bank?
