Lol ..giving up 109 points to a team that lost to the Dubs despite winning 52 FTA (against 26 for the GSW).
IA with most of the grades. Frankly I was surprised how good Tony stats looked, watching the game I thought he was shaky on offense and Collison got his way a lot of times against him.
OTOH, Manu looked incredible and carried the spurs early on but that didn't totally show up on the scoreboard.
I was thinking the same thing. These guys are pros. Leave them open and they are going to hit shots. NBA'ers are ridiculously good. The Defense sucked.
We don't want to be the free wheeling Suns who look good until the playoffs get here. The D MUST IMPROVE and I'm sure Pop realizes that. I'm thinking he wasn't real pleased about giving up so many points.
Yep, I agree too. It's amazing how professional basketball players will manage to hit uncontested shots. Either that or it's just a coincidence that the Spurs keep running into all these teams that "just shoot lights out" starting over just the last couple of years. There were nearly 20 years before that where it happened once in a blue moon.
Two lotery bound teams, I say the comparisson is fair.
4 turnovers and he shoots a lot when Duncan or Manu was shooting better.

Well, Tony actually shot 50% (9-18), while Manu was at 43% (6-14).
Frankly, I don't think Manu, Tim, OR Tony should be taking shots simply because they are "shooting well," especially when they all are scoring efficiently like last night. Take shots in the flow of the offense. I think all three did that.
First game, defense is poor (1st half at least) but I do like where they're headed with the offense. Everything wasn't a drag to score which takes so much energy away. Everyone looked very serious, I don't remember ever seeing these guys this serious so early in the season. The urgency is real and I finally believe it.
No, not this again. I'll stand by what I said - this may be one of the best games the Pacers play all year. Not just because they shot a high percentage. They played well for where they are at as a team, and their energy/effort level was superb. And the Spurs still found a way to get a solid win.
Don't put words in other people's mouth and then flame them over it. For the record, I posted this exchange on the game thread last night:
Edit: BTW - Bobby Simmons sure as didn't hit his uncontested shot last night. Or the rim. Or anything else. NBA players don't make ALL their jump shots, even when the defense is very poor. The Spurs had a lot of problems the last couple of seasons when they were getting any shot they wanted, and couldn't make a damned thing. Like it or not, the Pacers were shooting exceptionally well last night. And a team that is shooting well can be damn near impossible to beat. The Spurs did a good job.

simmons is just awful. somewhere this year we have to get a trade for a 3 done.

Like I said last night (and Tony on his website), I'll take any day such an "average" performance by him...

Asside the stats, what I liked from Tony is that he played like a TRUE PG!!
He didn't forced too much, was active all night on D (there's a reason why Pop played him so many minutes asside of Hill 3 faults...).
Actually, the best news is that if in a "non perfect" game, he brings such stasts, imagine when he'll find his "rythm"...
Tony playing like a real point guard isn't something he's been known for in the past. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if TP & MG can combine for 15 assists on the night the spurs will win that game 99% of the time.

that would be our back up 2 guard. will he be a swing sometimes? probably, when we go small, but we need depth at the 3 when a team throws out some bigger lineup and simmons is not the answer.
My problem with Parker last night was when he bricked those two jumpshots after hitting one. It's like he didn't shoot them in the flow of the game, he just shot them because he hit one before it.

I don't recall Parker forcing up any shots at all. I do recall one instance where Parker and Hill gave up shots that they should have taken.
Ginobili went ballsy on a couple of 3 point shots, but he has the green light to shoot those anyway. He had a 3 and a shot near the rim go in and out as well, so I'm not at all worried about "6-14"
Generally speaking, we're very fortunate that our big three just happen to be rather unselfish players on the whole. That said, I'd be hard pressed to find anybody who doesn't agree that our big three should have the authority to force shots up once in a while ("heat checks," shooting more to facilitate gaining a "good rhythm", etc.). It's like Sean Elliott was saying last night when Ginobili shot a 3 early in the shot clock (and made it) - "There are only a handful of guys in the history of the spurs organization who have the green light to shoot that shot..Ginobili is one of them (as are Parker/Duncan now, obviously.)"
Once you've established your core of go-to guys, it's beneficial to give them quite a bit more leeway than role players when it comes to taking shots. And still despite this fact, I don't think any of our big three abused that authority last night.
If anybody was forcing shots last night, it was Blair. Blair has been pretty good about taking shots when they come to him within the flow of the offense thereby scoring with high efficiency (FG% > 50). Last night, he appeared to put the rebounding on hold in lieu of forcing his own own offense more.
Assists and dimes are the same thing, man. =P
