Why is it that people born with a black dad and white mom (or visceversa) can be black but can't be white?

I'm not sure because the white gene is dominant and the black gene is recessive.

I should probably google or wiki it, but my understanding is that in black culture, there is the "one drop" rule. Basically, if you have one drop of African American blood, you're considered black.
Now I don't know the origins but I think that it could go probably go back centuries and how mixed people were viewed by white folks and/or by the law. I wouldn't be surprised if a "one drop" rule was something, for example, states and the federal government used as to deny people the right to vote before the 15th Amendment.

Because a lot of people are ignorant and can't see past skin color. Griffin, Williams, Kidd, Bibby, Parker, Udoka, Barnes, Obama, etc. aren't "black" or "white" (as they're so often referred to), they're "black" and "white".
Mix up the difference between a Bosnian and a Serbian and it's the end of the world, but call a mixed person "black" and it's more than okay, even though there's a far bigger difference between the latter than there is the former.
