So you graduated about '98. Your education level was probably comparable to a 9th or 10th grade level of the 70's.

Keep in mind, I'm not blaming anyone in the system. I'm blaming the system. Why do you think there is such a push for private schooling, home schooling, and charter schools like never before?
    Yes, 1998.

I think it was closer to 11th grade, but that's as a result of honors/AP/dual enrollment courses and a love of reading instilled in me at a young age.

My parents were both public school teachers and I work in higher education. I understand how the school systems are failing, believe me.

I graduated in the 70's. My kids both went to one of the best school districts in the state, Centennial, but is was severely lacking from my schooling.

They DO have the trait, but that doesn't necessarily mean they display the trait. That's where recessive and dominant genes come in.

Two brown eyed people can produce blue eyed children, if they both carry the recessive gene for blue eyes. Meaning that when they were conceived, the dna they received from one parent was for blue eyes, and the dna received from the other was brown eyes. Because brown is a dominant gene, they display brown eyes. But they carry the gene for blue eyes as well. When the dna is split in the gametes, the sperm/egg cell will only take one of those genes - brown or blue. If it takes the blue one and the other gamete contains a recessive blue gene, then the child displays blue eyes, despite both parents displaying brown eyes.

    That's how.

That is, of course, a simplification of the concept. In reality, genes can be of a dominance spectrum. If there is no strict dominant or purely recessive match, things like eye color or hair color are often a blending of the shades that parents display.

The point, though, remains. The biological parents do carry the traits, which may be passed on to their children regardless of whether or not they display the traits.
Wouldn't it work both ways then? If the baby has brown eyes, and the mother has blue eyes, the baby had to have gotten all of that trait from the father, no?

In this case, the mother contributes a blue gene, the father a brown. The results are green or brown. There are more than one gene that determines eye color. My mother had brown eyes, my father blue. I have green (olive) eyes. Sometimes my body chemistry makes them a look yellow-green.

Wait, how did you end up with green eyes? That can't be co-dominance, since blue and brown don't mix to make green, so is it incomplete dominance or something?

    Nope.

    It's really pretty simple.

Half the DNA comes from the 23 chromosomes contributed by the mother.

Half the DNA comes from the 23 chromosomes contributed by the father.

    Period.

Each sex cell (each sperm, each egg) contain half a set of chromosomes. When the sperm fertilizes the egg, the halves combine forming one new set of completely unique DNA, which is then replicated, and eventually goes from a tiny ball of cells into a baby.

Some traits are more dominant than others - which is why, say, both my brother and I inherited my mother's eyes (which she inherited from her mother). Some are less so - which is why my husband and one brother are blonde while everyone else in his family is brunette.

There is relational information (which is how paternity is determined, and why family units share similar DNA), but it always works out the same way. Half the DNA comes from mom, half comes from dad.

And I'm done explaining this to a troll. I'm all for good information being put out there, but damn. I know better than this. Tip of the hat for suckering me in, and a pleasant evening to all.

One thing about that does not make sense...22 cells are "regular cells", and the 23rd is a sex cell (sperm or egg). How can a man donate a sperm cell for his baby...if its a girl? Girls cannot produce sperm cells

i cant believe Gutter is able to keep people responding to his threads even though they all blatantly end in a troll job. even worse, most of it is borrowed material.

    wtf is going on?!

lol...the russian roulette was not borrowed, though the troll science was..in fact, theres like a site for that called trollphysics or something, check it out, its pretty cool...

these 2 things are not troll jobs; some of the questions might look dumb but I don't know much about these subjects.

    In high school?

Whether or not this epochal tale of inappropriate condom use and unfortunate reproduction is bull , and I still firmly believe that it is, you're a ing moron. The thought of a young girl pregnant with a child destined to inherit the badly bruised brain cells of a father as insipid as yourself, and/or a mother foolish enough to sleep with your dumb ass, is depressing. The thought of a generation for whom inventing such a fairytale to share on a message board serves as entertainment and/or humor is no less so.

This is tiresome. Someone, please, make it stop.

Like I said, there is more than one gene pair involved. I forget the specifics. Your biology book should have it in there, at least if you are getting what you pay for.

Back to the broader issue, how can I make sure she's pregnant? I haven't seen her since she told me...when I see her, do I ask her to take a pregnancy test right there? How long would it be until she gets a bump?

As I said earlier, despite knowing it's a troll job, it bothered me to think that there might be someone reading who could legitimately use this knowledge. And so...
