Seriously, what is with defensive awards in major pro sports and the seeming inability to ever get them right?

This is almost as bad as the year they gave it to Palmeiro even though he played like 130-something games at DH.

The problem is that Jeter is still a serviceable player and the Yanks don't have a young prospect waiting in the wings to challenge him for his spot. (lol Yankees farm system)

Atleast they have Jesus Montero at catcher otherwise they'd be overpaying for two old s

Who needs a farm system when you can just buy Andrus as soon as he hits free agency?

I think more and more people are questioning whether Jeter is even serviceable anymore. With the bat, I guess that might be true. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if he's even a .300 hitter again next season. He's always been a good hitter because he goes to right field (although that is getting to be a more and more overrated part of his game) and he doesn't try to hit homers in a line-up with so much protection. Even when Tex and A-Rod are struggling, teams know they're still a threat.

But "serviceable" as a fielder is very arguable. I'm not a baseball stats geek but I keep hearing and reading that almost every measure of advanced fielding statistical analysis places Jeter at or near the very bottom among shortstops in baseball. He doesn't commit errors but even playing back more, he has extremely limited range and simply doesn't get to balls that the vast majority of merely decent shortstops get to. A-Rod's not horrible but that left side of the infield is pretty bad especially for a playoff team.

Then again, the Giants just won the World Series with horrific infielders who have no range outside of Sanchez, who isn't all that great either. Shows how invaluable pitching can be. Both Huff and Renteria are butchers in the infield. Panda is fat wreck and Uribe isn't really much better if you ask me.

Damn now that I think about it, how the did they win the World Series again??

So apparently for a guy to get a gold glove is to not be physically able to get within range of a ball as it goes by him, or to know when not to try for it?

Yet another idiotic gem from ducks. He should be a gold glove voter.

His backup Ramiro Pena only had ONE error as a shortstop! Why didn't he win it?

No we aren't. You're counting a couple of stats and trying to make a case. That has nothing to do with defense.

I think everyone knows that the gold glove award is a joke much of the time and that it doesn't always have much to do with a player's fielding ability. But this really is just silly. Jeter could quite possibly be the worst fielding shortstop in the AL at this point. His range really is that bad, he only makes the most routine of plays, and with his jump and throw, he makes routine plays look like miracles. It's really beyond belief.

The defensive stats that these geeks make up in baseball are totally ed and nobody agrees on them. You got guys who never picked up a glove in their life telling us what makes a great short-stop.. Do we all agree that Cano is a great 2nd baseman? Well Teixeira recently said this..

"I hear about this UZR, Ultimate Zone Rating. And I saw Robinson Cano has a negative Ultimate Zone Rating. That is absolutely crazy," Teixeira said. "Robinson Cano is by far .. . the best second baseman I've ever seen and he's a negative defender by that Ultimate Zone Rating. So I don't put any stock into those things."

Not saying Jeter was the right choice but baseball geeks with useless stats love to exxagerate his defensive failures so to speak..
