he could lose a lot of time to JA once he gets back if he can't get on track.
the whole year he's either been passing up wide open shots or taking very poor ones. tonight he was 1-10 and he's been shooting terribly all year.
dude needs to get his confidence back quick. he's a versatile player but his mind if screwed right now. "Mason like" on his shooting right now.
granted he did have a decent game last night, but who didn't? 76ers are terrible on the defensive end.
hope he does one of those late night shoot arounds at the practice facility tonight.

he looks like rj last season
I'm actually beginning to wonder if the emergence of Neal and Anderson (prior to the injury) is affecting his confidence some what. Or at least making him press a little on the offensive end and over-think (maybe part in parcel with his increased load carrying the bench).
He has to get his head right though, with the way Manu and TP are clicking in the SL, Hill has to become the leader of the bench.
Nash destroyed him and he hasn't recovered.
Hill played good defense today and had 4 boards, 3 steals, and led the team in assists.
His shot is off but I think he played well tonight.
Hill's FT shooting is almost 90% this year, which to me is a good indicator of a good shooter. He's just adjusting to his new bench role IMO, and could be trying a little too hard.
Can't fault his effort, I'll take his statline and +19 (+/-) when he was on the court, which beat out Bonner even. 'Nuff said.
I'm happy with Hill's role right now. He's not the talented scorer TP, Manu, or even RJ are right now, so I feel that if we were to force him into that kind of large role there'd be a higher chance of failure and it would mess with the chemistry. All I ask of Hill is to run the offense well when he has to, space the floor, play good D, and find open guys especially with all the shooters we have now. No need to try and be Manu lite like we had all dreamed he would be.
The jumpshot will come and go as with every shooter, we have proof that he can hit them when they count. But he needs to be solid and comfortable with everything else, and I think he's done an okay job so far and will improve immensely.
This and more then ever he's contributing in other categories, and looks more like a combo guard that can create for others.
He doesnt have any specific role to play, he seems lost on what exactly to do. He was to play a bit of pg, sg and also defend bigs and wings. He has a unique position and responsibilities for the spurs.
Hill looked aggressive at the end of the game, really looked to penetrate and create withou hesitating. it was like Pop told him something. That's how he's gotta be. I've always had the feeling that Hill for whatver reason plays too passively on offense. Always felt he could contribute a lot more on that end. There's just no reason to be passive. He's in his third year already he needs to take the bull by the horns.
Hill doesn't need to score like last season if RJ continues scoring like he is. Some more efficiency would be nice and rediscovering the corner 3 would definitely help, but he doesn't need to be averaging 16PPG like he was through the second half of last season.
His defense is getting better, but I still think he was better defensively when he first entered the league, which is kind of strange. He is certainly looking better on that end early on though, I admire his grit when matching up on much taller opposition.
him and Blair need to stop tweeting and get their ass to the gym
He was awesome last year and we were all talking about him permanently replacing Parker. Maybe Tony signing that extension has completely destroyed his confidence. If so, he needs to get over it quick.
Big and smalls....![]()
to be fair, Hill brought the defensive intensity last night.
Hill also started slow last season, and got better when he started getting more minutes and shots with TP injured. Now with JA out I think he'll see more minutes and be fine
Last season Hill first 10 games
Hornets - 9pts (4-7FG) 4asts
at Bulls - 8pts (2-6FG) 0ast
Kings - 18pts (7-12FG) 5asts
at Jazz -2pts (1-8FG) 1ast
at Blazers - 8pts (3-6FG) 0ast
Raptors - 22pts (8-15FG) 5asts (TP DNP)
Mavs - 11pts (4-9FG) 2asts (TP DNP)
Thunder - 18pts (7-12FG) 0ast
at Mavs - 15pts (6-15FG) (TP DNP)
Jazz - 18pts (7-17FG) 2asts (TP DNP)
I'll throw this idea out there. Hill and Blair have both talked about their aggressive weight room work this summer. Normally, Brungy gives the Spurs very effective workout plans. Did George over-develop his upper body on the bench and fan-out his chest and back in such a way that it has effected his shot? That happens to basketball players sometimes and it influences some players' "touch".
There are those that will scoff at this notion, but I've personally experienced this and seen it happen to others over the years.
if he works out and shoots around he will still keep his shot. The good thing is he doesn't need to score as much, but I have noticed a lack in his confidence which is a major factor.
...and other players have pretty much stayed the same. Kobe, for example.
I think it's his confidence. He doesn't have the role he had last year, nor the deep bench to play with. And it's still early in the season.
Lets remember that George Hill is a very streaky shooter and now he's expanding his long distance game from just corner 3's to all around the arc. I expect his %'s to go down from last season's since the corner 3's are the easiest to make and be consistent with.
Hill was also a terrible shooter in his college days and still goes through stretches where he can't buy a bucket especially in the preseasons.
I expect Hill's %'s to rise from where they are now but I hope he stays more of a slasher than a shooter to keep defenses on their toes and so he can use his length and athletic ability around the rim. The Spurs bench also doesn't have much in the way of a lane penetrator and when he's on the court with Parker or Manu, him slashing could rest their legs a bit...

No doubt confidence is part of it. Shooting poorly erodes confidence. Now then, why did his shot go south since the start of training camp, when his confidence should be there? Coming off a year that was a real confidence-builder for Hill, why did he lose confidence?
I think it's mostly mental. His shot has been off, going back to the preseason. He came out super aggressive but as he started laying bricks, he's become more hesitant shooting the ball, and that has seemed to bleed into other aspects like running the offense. Missing time probably didn't help matters either. He is passing up good shots, and taking bad ones.
I think he just needs to calm down. His recent outings, while not great, were more productive, so that should help. Otherwise, nothing is going to restore his confidence like seeing the ball go in the basket.
As long as he hasn't hit a slump of Roger Mason proportions in only his third season, I think he will be just fine.
