as soon as he first said he would

Andrew Bynum has once again pushed back his expected return date, as he won't appear in any games until early December as the best case scenario.

"Hopefully in a week or so, I'm practicing," he said Wednesday.

The Lakers are currently looking at signing a veteran backup big man.

No. Considering we've known for over a month now that he might be out till early December, per his doctor.

that's what i thought. I swore i had heard that already, so i wondered why realgm was only now just reporting it.

Unless back then they were still hopeful he might somehow end up ahead of schedule ?

He's already running and pivoting on the knee. No need to rush back for the pre-season.

Bynum’s return date? Jackson pointing to Dec. 10

MINNEAPOLIS — Phil Jackson revealed Thursday the Lakers’ hopeful timetable is for Andrew Bynum to make his season debut on Dec. 10 in Chicago.

Jackson offered that projection even though Bynum hasn’t been comfortable with the minor progression to having Lakers assistant coach Chuck Person apply some light contact to him in recent on-court workouts. But Jackson said if Bynum can progress a little more over the weekend and begin practicing with the team in a week, as Bynum hopes, then it’s realistic to project two weeks from there for when Bynum plays a game.

Bynum had told Jackson last week that it might require him three weeks of practice workouts before a game debut, but Jackson pushed to look more at two weeks. That leads Jackson to the Dec. 10 plan, which is the start of a six-game Eastern trip for the Lakers. The last home game before that trip is Dec. 8 vs. the Clippers.

“We’re not backing down from our timetable, which we’d hoped (for),” Jackson said. “But we still have to take it really slow once he gets on the floor.”

Bynum was able to do more light on-court individual work Thursday at the Target Center. He even drained five consecutive 3-pointers while his teammates watched him shoot for fun — and Bynum flashed a big grin and even bigger open palm to them to signify his five in a row. But Jackson allowed that it’s possible Bynum’s slower timetable — if he practices for three weeks before playing, he would have just one week of perhaps three games before the Christmas showdown with Miami — might be needed.

“It looks to me like we just have to say we want this to be right and we want him to last for the whole season,” Jackson said. “We don’t want to rush this.”

After Thanksgiving, Jackson said the Lakers will ramp up their practice schedule in part to help develop Bynum’s game again.

Asked if the Lakers could be good enough on defense to win a le without Bynum, Jackson said: “I don’t think so right now.”

He usually holds up until February..this year, with the extended rest, he probably has a serious injury in April instead, good timing for the rest of the league..
