While his teammate is dealing with some difficult personal matters, Tim Duncan is approaching a San Antonio Spurs milestone.
Duncan can surpass David Robinson as the Spurs’ career scoring leader Friday night when they visit the Utah Jazz.
San Antonio (9-1) can also set a new team record after tying the best 10-game start in franchise history with a 103-94 victory over Chicago on Wednesday. The Spurs also started 9-1 in 1980 and ’81, with both teams losing their 11th game.
On Wednesday, Tony Parker scored 21 points hours after his actress wife Eva Longoria filed divorce papers to end their three-year marriage. He met with reporters before the game, making brief responses to three questions about the divorce. Afterward, a team official said reporters would have their access to Parker cut off if he was asked any more personal questions.
“It was a weird game,” said Parker, who has surpassed 20 points in four straight games while shooting 62.1 percent. “I had a rough start.”
The Spurs rallied from an 10-point deficit at the half, outscoring the Bulls 37-12 in the third quarter en route to their eighth straight win. They haven’t won nine in a row since an 11-game run Feb. 11-March 6, 2008.
Duncan scored eight of his 16 points in the third quarter while finishing with a season-high 18 rebounds. He is 12 points shy of Robinson’s all-time franchise scoring record of 20,790 points.
Duncan appeared in his 987th career game Wednesday, matching the number Robinson played during his 14-year career.
The power forward has a good chance to surpass Robinson on Friday. He’s scored at least 14 points in his last 15 meetings with Utah, averaging 18.5 in the last six.
While Duncan has been consistent against the Jazz (8-4), the Spurs lost all four games against them last season - the first time Utah swept the season series since 1993-94.
“They are a great team, they always execute great, they have great players that play hard and they never give up, so there’s nothing new about them,” San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. “They’re the Jazz so we have to go there and play great to come back with a win.”
The Jazz are coming off a 98-88 win over New Jersey on Wednesday, bouncing back after their five-game winning streak was snapped by a 115-108 loss to Oklahoma City on Monday.
Against the Nets, Paul Millsap had 19 points and 15 rebounds and Deron Williams had 23 points, going 12 of 13 at the free-throw line. Utah shot 40.2 percent from the field and was just 1 of 12 from 3-point range, but it went 31 of 37 at the line and had all five starters score in double figures for the first time this season.
Raja Bell returned after a one-game absence due to a groin injury and contributed 15 points.
“I haven’t been helping out the way I should be,” said Bell, who came in averaging 7.0 points. “Tonight I was determined to get out there, be aggressive and give my team some help.”
Bell’s biggest presence may be on the defensive end. He helped the Jazz hold New Jersey to 37.6 percent shooting after they gave up a season-high in points to the Thunder.
C.J. Miles left Wednesday’s game with a strained lower back, but said he doesn’t plan to miss any games. Miles is Utah’s top scorer off the bench, averaging 10.0 points.

Jerry Sloan to miss next two gamesEmail Print Comments2 Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan will miss the team's next two games to attend funeral services for a family member.
Jazz assistant coach Phil Johnson will assume head coaching duties in Friday night's home game against San Antonio and Saturday's game at Portland.
Sloan is expected to rejoin the team prior to the Jazz's home game Monday night against Sacramento.

On to the next win
Nice to see some recognition for the spurs today on ATH and Jackie MacMullan saying Pop is the best coach in the NBA![]()
i saw that as well. sometimes i agree and sometimes i dont.
I'm very curious to see the Accuscore data on spurs-jazz -
http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=301119026
The favorite team to win according to Accuscore for matchups involving the spurs have been accurate so far with the exception of spurs-hornets.
If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say Accuscore will show the Jazz as 60-40 favorites. We'll see tomorrow.
OKC just got a win there. It's very simple- minimize Millsap and Jefferson's effectiveness. Besides, if we can't shut these quasi-twin towers down how can we expect to shut down Gasol/Odom/Bynum? This is a good early test for our frontcourt defense.
I wonder how much the Jazz will be effected with the absence of Sloan? Either way they are a tough team & it is always difficult up there.
You boiled down the game plan to shutting down two Jazz players, and Deron Williams is not one of them?
If we shut those two down and hold them to 15 points each at the most, let's see Deron try to win the game on his own with the paint closed off. Utah's not as good of a shooting team without Korver and Okur. If Millsap and Jeff are ineffective we have the best chance of winning (see OKC game and how they beat them). If they kill us, all Williams has to do is throw it in and stand around (see Miami/Orlando games).
Thanks to duncan228 and ace3g for posting all these news.
I've penciled this game as a loss. Jazz at home will play hard, Spurs won't respond to that intensity and lay an egg.
To quote Avery Johnson at the '99 championship celebration, "Did Utah win the championship? , no."
To quote Terrell Owens, "Get ya popcorn ready."
we win this game we can finish the month with 1 loss only...
Please don't tell Tjastal this, he thinks Pop is a horrible coach.
Spurs quietly off to blazing start
By Brian T. Smith
The Salt Lake Tribune
The New Orleans Hornets have made the most early-season noise, courtesy of the buzzing return of All-Star guard Chris Paul. The Jazz have initially earned the most respect, following a breathtaking 4-0 road trip that plastered Utah on television highlight reels across the country. But Utah’s opponent tonight at EnergySolutions Arena is the hottest team in the NBA. And, as always, the San Antonio Spurs are operating under the radar.
San Antonio (9-1) has won eight consecutive games, moving into a tie with the Hornets for the best record in the league and first place in the Western Conference’s Southwest Division. While many in the media continue to fawn over Miami’s Big Three, praise Boston’s Big Four, drool upon contact with Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant and kowtow before the Los Angeles Lakers, the Spurs are doing what they always do: win.
Since Gregg Popovich took over the franchise in 1997, San Antonio has won the NBA championship four times while making the playoffs 13 consecutive seasons. Granted, the Spurs have not produced the same spark the past two years, dealing with injuries while adjusting to change. But a San Antonio core of Popovich, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili remains intact, while recent additions such as Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, George Hill and DeJuan Blair have either added proven veteran experience or passionate youth. Factor in that longtime general manager R.C. Buford is still discovering diamonds — 26-year-old rookie reserve guard Gary Neal is averaging 6.1 points and 2.5 assists while shooting 45.2 percent behind the 3-point line — and there is no doubt that the Spurs are still the Spurs. Which could spell trouble for a Jazz team that will take the floor during the next two games without coach Jerry Sloan, who will be absent after a death in the family.
Sloan and Utah All-Star guard Deron Williams dished out heavy praise for San Antonio prior to Utah’s practice Thursday. The grace was guided by Sloan, who credited Popovich with consistently producing compe ive teams characterized by great leadership and teamwork.
“He’s a very well respected coach,” Sloan said. “I think a lot of what he does we’d like to be able to do sometimes, and we don’t get it done.”
Meanwhile, Williams broke the Spurs down to their most basic traits: great coach, good system, great players.
“Those three things make you a good team,” Williams said.
Williams also believes that improved play from Ginobili and Parker - combined with a more comfortable and in-tune Jefferson — has San Antonio clicking just 10 games into its season.
Jefferson was technically a bust in 2009-10, despite averaging 14.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 46.7 percent from the field. But the veteran forward has turned a year’s worth of experience in the Spurs’ demanding system into early rewards this time around. His average numbers have significantly jumped — 18.7 points, 53.9 percent from the field, 46.3 on 3-point attempts. And as Jefferson has suddenly ascended, San Antonio’s longtime star, Duncan, has been allowed to temporarily slumber. The two-time NBA most valuable player is putting up career-low statistics — 13.7 points, 9.8 rebounds. But he is also averaging an all-time low in minutes (29.9), which should him allow him to rise up and peak when the games truly begin to count in mid-April.
“Right now, Tim’s not even having to score for those guys to be successful,” Williams said.

By Jeff McDonald
...Tim Duncan arrived here Thursday afternoon just 13 points shy of eclipsing Hall of Famer David Robinson as the Spurs’ all-time NBA scoring leader.
...Had it come in San Antonio, Duncan figures, he’d probably have one of the most fearsome shot-blockers in league history to contend with.
“If we’re at home, I’m sure David will try to come out of the stands and block my shot,” Duncan joked.
