Lakers Head Coach, Phil Jackson, believes neither the Spurs or Lakers have a chance to beat the the Bulls record 72 win season. Below is one of the quotes from the story, above is the link to the story.

"The Spurs really haven't made a swing out to the West Coast, we'll see how that goes," he said. "We'll have to make a quick run to the middle of the country, and then on to the East Coast in the next month.
"And our records will start to even out as we go along."

    Ok....

I don't really give a what he thinks. Nor am I concerned with eclipsing that record. Give the regular season trophies to the Mavs.

He's half right and he would know about anyone making the 72 win record since he coached that team.
But.. For to say that with their cupcake schedule that they've had is a joke. The Spurs have earned their wins and if they win out by Sunday, they reserve the right to say that they have the best record.

I knew, I knew it was only a matter of time before someone asks him about the Spurs.

And it had to be ESPN

It seems like I've been hearing talk about beating the 72 game record since about 06 when Detroit had that hot start under Flip Saunders. Every year now it gets brought up.

Yea, because the Lakers have played a tough tough schedule themselves:

    Houston (W)
    @ Phoenix (W)
    Golden State (W)
    Memphis (W)
    @ Sacramento (W)
    Toronto (W)
    Portland (W)
    Minnesota (W)
    @ Denver (L)
    Phoenix (L)
    @ Milwaukee (W)
    @ Detroit (W)
    @ Minnesota (W)
    Golden State (W)

I don't see many elite teams there. In fact, I don't see many with a winning record at all.

The team who wins the most games this season, whether it be the Spurs, Lakers, Celtics or Hornets.. will win 65 games. This is going to be a long tough season. But early success like this for the Spurs tells me they are the best team in the NBA today. If they win the next three games, and sit at 15-1, they will no longer be under the radar. The only shame is the Lakers keep winning and so do the Hornets. I wouldn't mind a three game lead on other teams on Monday morning if the Spurs win out the rest of the week.

    he's right.

the test for this Spurs team is how they do on the road against the elite teams. wins against Orlando at home don't mean anything--we beat Orlando by 20 at home last year. we won on the road against the Suns, OKC, and Utah. those are good teams, but none of them are elite. we'll get to see the quality of this Spurs team on how they do on the road against the likes of Denver, Dallas (Dallas more so because they tend to bring their A game against SA, not because i think they're better than a team like OKC), LA, and NO, who i consider to be the top teams in the West.

SA never won even close to 72 with even better squads and weaker compe ion. If figures a nimrod from BSPN would even ask such a stupid question. BTW, the Spurs have been out to the west coast (Clippers), who just beat NO.

Pop would never in a million years coach this team to maximize its RS win total. He's trying to win in the playoffs.

The quick start will likely allow the Spurs to be a playoff team, given reasonably good health. The team will have to improve late in the year to be a force in the POs.

I won't miss phillip when he leaves after this year. As great a coach as he is, he is still an A-hole to the highest degree.

    Sorry Guys,
tried to post the results of that Bulls team.. Anyway, my point is the Bulls had two monster streaks that season.. they had a 13 game winning streak.. then an 18 game winning streak and only lost back to back games once that season...

I don't see how any spurs fan can interpret what Phil said as offensive. He simply stated the obvious.

You don't have to like the guy, but he didn't say anything egregiously offensive or over-the-line.

The Lakers strength of schedule is irrelevant to what Phil said, and yet I see people bringing this up as though it cons utes a counter-argument.

Phil said neither teams have a chance, that teams in the East have a time-zone advantage, and that both the Spurs and Lakers records will even out with time.

Wouldn't it be nice, if much like the home run race MLB had years ago, the NBA would have a record wins race between the Lakers and the Spurs? Can you imagine if both teams were on pace during the last ten games of the season? That would be unbelievable basketball... As unlikely as that is...

Not a chance for the Spurs. Pop simply doesn't care about it that much. The only way the Spurs could ever do that is if they just had so much overwhelming talent that they were beating teams with scrubs.

The Lakers have no chance, and Jackson knows that. There's only one reason the Bulls did it, and he's not playing anymore.

Also, I agree with this statement. A great coach, who has the right to talk about that record, was just mentioning the obvious.

Yeap....as of today its only Portland and Denver at 8-6.
