This is gonna be a short thread.

Our championship hopes rely on Dejuan Blair,George Hill, and Richard Jefferson becoming the backbone of our offense. Duncan/Parker/Ginobili are still the leaders and go-to-guys at the end, but Duncan and Ginobili are too old to be doing it night-in-night-out as they were in prior years. What will put the team on top is if Dejuan Blair,George Hill, and RJ can have consistent impact and help the spurs become a BIG 6.

Pre 2008 Spurs had the BIG 3 featuring fillers like Horry/Bowen/Finley.

2010 Spurs need the BIG 6 to win the championship.

I would never ever refer to Bowen as a "filler".

Bowen is the ULTIMATE FILLER in the best way possible. He was exactly what popovich was looking for. He was ultimately effective because of the BIG 3.

I think our championship hopes rely more on our big three being healthy in the post-season.

well duh, your missing my point... If anyone of the top 8 players gets injured the spur's chances will drop tremendously. Were winning because of our depth and versatility to score. My point is that RJ/Blair/Hill will have to make the jump to the Parker/Ginobili/Duncan type impact. Can't rely solely on the big 3 to do everything and the rest of the team filling in like before.

Did this guy seriously call an 8 time All-Defense 1st or 2nd team player and arguably the best perimeter defender of the decade a "filler"?

At least on offense he was.

That's irrelevant. Ben Wallace during his glory days in Detroit was terrible on offense. He had a terrible shot. He was terrible at the line. He virtually had no offensive game.

And yet he most certainly wasn't a "filler" on that team. His rebounding and interior defense were absolutely critical to Detroit's success back then. Calling him a filler just because he didn't put points on the board would be making a mockery of his contributions to that team, similar to what you're doing with Bruce Bowen.

Wow, I love Bowen. I really didn't mean to discredit him. I guess I did. Bowens D is awesome. But clearly it was the Spurs BIG 3 and NOT BIG 4. When I say filler, I dont mean it as disrespect. Just like Scottie Pippen being Robin to Michael's batman. Its just how I perceived it. Bowen would not be mentioned among the greats if it wasn't for how well he fit the spurs. And how well, the spurs BIG 3 allowed Bowen to stay on the floor, even though his offense was terrible and he shot free throws worse than he did fieldgoals...

Disagree with the Spurs needing LA, or Boston, to have one of their key players get injured.

You do know that Bowen scored almost the same number of points in his career as Steve Kerr, even though he played 3 fewer seasons than Kerr? All while working his ass off being one of the best perimeter defenders to ever play the game?

You need to quit while you can. Pippen is a HOFer. Fillers don't get elected into the HOF.

Good point, but what made Bowen an overall better player than Wallace, was Bowen's timely, trademark, corner 3. Bowen may not have an offensive Juggernaut, but he wasn't just a defensive stopper either.

Bowen is one of those guys who will never be a star, never get lots of attention/credit...yet will always be among the first guys you want on your team.

unfortunately there is no 'stat' for his type of contribution.

Bowen was not filler, and he most definitely did make it a big 4. I'll admit that when he was playing for SA I didn't have this notion. In retrospect, he was.

What is that suppose to prove? Kerr is some type of all star. Kerr was a role player or filler player.

Our champion ship hopes rely solely on our ability to deal with the leagues premier fronttcourts like boston orlando and LA and you can throw Dallas in there for sure and we have only played dallas and orl of those four and we are 1-1. So its not looking to promising despite our phenomenal start. It can be done but its not looking to promising. Our rebounding aint to stellar against bigger teams nowaday to add. But we definetely have a punchers chance at 5 no doubt.

This is what I thought going into this year. But, why just try and build your team to match one team. This is what the Mavs did in 06 by building a team that could beat the Spurs, then completely breakdown vs the Heat then Warriors in the playoffs.

If Blair and Hill take the next step, with out this, Mcdyess and Splitter can do all they can, but were not winning the championship

Kind of a clownish statement. Bowen was most DEFINITELY a filler. If one of the big three goes down, bowen isn't going to replace one of them. He has a specific role which is to be a lock-down defender with some occasional corner three's. That's like saying Malik Rose wasn't a filler because of his ability to get offensive rebounds and put backs or Robert Horry's uncanny ability to hit clutch three's, grab offensive and defensive rebounds and score in the paint, and let's not forget blocking shots on the defensive end. Without Horry, there is no 2005 championship. In totality, Make no mistake about it, Bowen was a great role player who specialized on the defensive end. He wasn't brought to lead the team to victory night in and night out. Therefore, he was a filler or role player.
