The Spurs have slowed down, even if their offense hasn’t
    Rob Mahoney

One of the more intriguing stories of this young season has been the San Antonio Spurs, who after years of grinding out games and wearing down opponents, had suddenly begun to race through games in breakneck fashion. Tony Parker (and to a lesser extent, George Hill and Manu Ginobili) bumped the pace of the San Antonio offense, and the influx of transition points and opportunities was widely credited with the rejuvenation of the Spurs’ offense. San Antonio sprinted to the top of the league, and their offense was understandably the talk of the town.

The two definitely seemed to line up. The Spurs scored, and they ran. But did they score because they ran?

"They can run the floor or walk the ball up, attack from inside and out, run structured sets or fly off the cuff. So, do tell: how exactly does anyone plan to stop the Spurs?"

I've definitely noticed this, and I can't say that the slowdown is good for the team.

Don't mean to sound like a broken record, but more minutes for Bonner means less fastbreak; just another downside to playing the guy (he doesn't rebound, can't make the outlet pass, and rarely comes up with steals).

Unfortunate, because the emphasis on the beginning of the season was to get easy baskets. Hate to see Popovich abandoning that good plan so soon.

Is the "slowing down of the Spurs offense", the result of Pop wanting to slow it down, or are defenses catching up to the Spurs offense?

This is all about adjustments. Other teams have made adjustments to our fast break, which has lead to less offensive rebounds by the other team and more opportunities to score in the half court set. Teams now have to pick their poison.

Without Bonner's contributions thus far, the Spurs would have a much worse record. He's made some serious pointage when it seems to have counted most. So, no Bonner, ok take back all those points and just run like up and down the floor, and be the Suns.

Bonner spreads the floor so others can drive the lane. That works. I've seen it work. I am sure others have as well. Your irrational hatred for someone you don't know is amusing.

It's not slowing down. Shooting percentages mean a lot, as to turnovers and steals. Point differential is much more important than number of possessions. I think the Spurs have recently played slower teams. When the opponent walks the ball up the floor, time is taken from the clock. I have noticed many defensive sequences by the Spurs where the opponent cannot get a shot off before the shot clock expires. That slows the game, in a good way. Hard to fast break from side out.

Just admit you have no ing idea what you are talking about.

    1. Poor defense leads to more open looks by the opponent.

    2. Open looks lead to shots.

    3. Missed shots lead to rebounds and fast breaks.

    4. Good defensive teams get out on the break when they can. The Spurs had 33 fast break points against the Warriors. You won't get that with a defensive team. The numbers catch up to you in the average.

Like your name suggests, it's not hard, some people just make it that way.

    Now go your sister.

That's fine, but to say he's hurting the team when they are 20-3, and he's contributed more than ever... that's just a stupid fan comment. When he doesn't show up, hammer him then. Predictions are like assholes... actually they come from assholes.

I am not a Bonner lover. I wanted the Spurs to ditch the guy last year. I think he's an oaf and my butt clutches couch material when he puts the ball on the floor. Still, he's been pretty solid. I have no complaints yet. When he screws the pooch, I will let him have it.

nothing worse than a message board liar. bonner's numbers are essentially the same as last year. leave to a know-nothing like you to ascribe some magical powers to the ginger-haired fairy.

I'm not a Bonner hater either. I like the fact that he spaces the floor. My concern, is when Bonner isn't hitting his 3's that Pop still keeps him in there.
Bonner gives great effort, but he is a liability on defense. Pop should bench when hes cold.

First of all, I would like to congratulate itsoweezee's fantasy team for kicking my team's ass last week.

Next, I am happy that the Spurs have the number one offense in the league. It doesn't matter how the Spurs do it, whether it is up and down the court or a slow it down half court offense. This team has the weapons to utilize both and depending on the personnel on the court and the opponent's style, would be able to adapt to a different pace.

Maybe, but as long as he's on the floor, someone has to cover him and the others rest. Manu doinks 6 from long range and he's fine, Matty does it once and everyone calls for his head on a platter. I expect every shot he shoots to go in, plus he's been playing decent defense against so so teams. Bonner's points are all bonus.

To his credit, bonner IS shooting something like 50% from three this year, which is markedly better than last year.

Hit the link for the whole piece.

Ginobili, Duncan tied for team lead in plus-minus
    Tim Griffin

...Here’s a look at the Spurs’ net plus-minus after 23 games.

    Tim Duncan Plus-208

    Manu Ginobili Plus-208

    Tony Parker Plus-174

    George Hill Plus-163

    Richard Jefferson Plus-158

    Matt Bonner Plus-101

    DeJuan Blair Plus-93

    Gary Neal Plus-62

    Antonio McDyess Plus-31

...Those numbers are intriguing, but are waited to those players who receive more playing time. Theoretically, a player who is plus-4 in 10 minutes of action should be more valuable to the team than a player who was plus-10 in 40 minutes.

So I divided a player’s plus-minus score by their minutes played for an average.

Here’s a list of players currently on the roster or the team’s injured list:

    Tim Duncan .314

    Manu Ginobili .283

    Matt Bonner .281

    George Hill .273

    Tony Parker .230

    Richard Jefferson .217

    DeJuan Blair .197

    Gary Neal .170

    Antonio McDyess .082
