Let’s define our terms: what do we mean by “the Post-Duncan Era”?

We could mean the era that follows Tim Duncan’s retirement, but that’s not necessary. The Post-Duncan Era could also refer to a period that comes at the end of Duncan’s career, a period in which his role on the team strongly undergirds San Antonio’s success, but is not critical to it.

If we allow this as a working definition, we have to ask, are we there? Has the Post-Duncan Era already arrived? And, if so, what should we call it?

The Spurs crushed the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers last night. Tim Duncan contributed 2 points and 4 rebounds in 29 minutes. His defense was solid, and doesn’t show up in the boxscore, but he was, in many ways, a bit player, something that is not an infrequent occurrence this season. Tim Duncan has been an afterthought in a handful of Spurs victories.

Seems that Varner's piece is one quantum leap into optimism from Blanchard's guarded pessimism.

Is Duncan evolving into a role player for the Spurs?

Lost in a little of the giddiness of the Spurs’ convincing victory over the Lakers was the continued evolution of Tim Duncan’s role with this team.

Duncan matched his career low with two points, hitting only 1-for-7 from the field. It marked the 12th time the nine-time NBA first-team All-Star has failed to produce double figures in scoring this season.

Before this season, he failed to produce double figures only 39 times in the regular season and five times in the playoffs in 1,147 games coming into this season.

Despite his struggles, the Spurs soundly defeated the Lakers and have seemingly evolved on offense even without much scoring from the player most consider the greatest power forward in NBA history. The Spurs are averaging 105.9 points per game — most by a San Antonio team since 1994-95.

I think we've slowly learned how to evolve without a prime Duncan, enough to compete once he's retired. Ginobili's window is also shutting soon though, even if he has 4-5 more years left, someone's going to have to step up and take over the team. Tony Parker will likely be that someone for at least an amount of time, until someone else comes along who's good enough. Maybe George Hill, James Anderson, and DeJuan Blair are going to be a big part of the future. Who knows, we'll have to wait and see.
