So I was having a few beers with another long time fan and he was concerned about our size in the paint particularly when we play the Lakers and Mavericks in the playoffs. So he offered up this trade idea:

Spurs trade McDyess, Splitter and our 2011 #1 pick
to Cleveland for Anderson Varejao. Cleveland cuts McDyess and we resign him 30 days later.

We get a forward that can play with energy and cause some havoc with LA and Dallas. He also has experience in the Spurs system.

Cleveland gets cap relief and a young player with upside with a very reasonable contract and a #1 pick.

    Would you make this trade?

I would want Varejao, but there's no way he's worth McDyess, Splitter AND a #1 pick..

We get McD back and the #1 is a late pick and we already have a stable of young players.

You really want to trade away Splitter before having at least 1 full season under his belt? The Spurs only coveted him for about... forever.

Splitter is going to be a project like RJ. He's going to need this whole season to get acclimated then he'll come around next year and become who we want him to be.

Well one thing is for sure...we ain't been gettin' out of 'McDyess, Splitter and our 2011 #1 pick'.

RC better get on the ol' telephono asap and correct this because right now every big, i.e., PF and/or C is chomping at the bit to play the Spurs so they can pad their stats. Damn too many big numbers put on Timmy, Blair, & McD this season. And since TS doesn't get to play and Bonner thinks he is a damn 6'10" shooting guard we're in trouble against teams like the Lakers & Celtics come playoff time. Our smaller guys will have to shoot in the 65% range during each series.

btw...RC, stop going after Ime. He is at best a sometimes 'D' Leaguer. It is making you & Pop look stupid. Go after a big that can give us a few rebounds, a block or two and use of fouls. Also to give TD more resting pine time.

I'd do it for Bonner, Mcdyess (if he came back after 30 days) and a #1 but not Splitter...

Spurs could have chosen Varejao when they drafted Beno.

I like Varejao...he's got hustle and he's a master at drawing fouls.

splitter & Dice are not expiring contracts that's why they would demand a 1st rounder imho. if they were expiring contracts the cavs would be more than glad to get it done in a heartbeat.

Mahinmi over David Lee/Gortat/Turiaf/Bass/Ersan Ilyasova/Blatche/Amir Johnson is just as bad. Seriously, the 2nd round was loaded with talent that year and the Spurs waste their pick on the most injury-prone, low bball-IQ big I've ever seen play in a Spurs uniform.

Keep in mind that our #1 pick will be late in the first round and the chances of finding another George Hill is not good.

We have drafted late for years & have done a decent job as of late.

If you could guarantee Dice back with us after 30 days, then that's worth discussing. But here is the bottom line:
-You don't know for sure if Dice will come back - you just don't. This wouldn't be the first time either, Dice was packaged with Billups for AI and did indeed return to Detroit, but I cant imagine this type of stuff doesn't have an effect on ones pride.
-You don't know if that late 1st round is valuable or not. George Hill's don't happen often, but that doesn't mean they never do. Too many cons in this trade.

Even the best make the occasional mistake. Case in point.

So the official "Splitter sucks let's get rid of him" threads are starting to roll in... let's check the DNP meter:

    Splitter DNP's (incl a game of 1 minute): 8
    Spurs losses: 6

I know Chumpdumper is biting his nails as I write this.
