In a text to the Express-News, Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said a final decision has not been reached on Owens, but acknowledged the 28-year-old former Oral Roberts standout was on the team’s radar.
“He’s under strong consideration,” Buford said. “In a small group.”

They might also be considering someone like Marcus Landry or Kyle Weaver if they put a premium on shooting.

Spurs Sign Larry Owens to 10-day Contract
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs today announced they have signed forward Larry Owens from the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League to a 10-day contract. Owens is the second call-up of the 2010-11 D-League season.
Owens, a 6-7 forward, has spent the past two seasons with the 66ers. This year he has started in all 23 games for Tulsa, averaging 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 31.1 minutes while shooting .462 (108-234) from the field, .373 (25-67) from three-point range and .743 (52-70) from the foul line. He’s scored in double figure 18 times, including a season-high vs. Iowa on Nov. 26. Owens recorded a double-double in the season opener with 16 points and a season-high 13 rebounds at Bakersfield on Nov. 19.
Last season Owens started all 50 games for the 66ers, averaging 15.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.50 steals in 36.3 minutes. He shot .489 (299-611) from the field, .380 (52-137) from beyond the arc and .772 (139-180) from the charity stripe. In the D-League playoffs he averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists in eight games while leading the 66ers to the D-League Finals. Prior to joining the 66ers Owens was in training camp with the New Orleans Hornets.
Owens played two seasons at Oral Roberts University posting career averages of 10.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.62 assists. In his second season with the Golden Eagles he was named to the All-MCC First Team and was the All-MCC Defensive Player of the Year.
Owens has also played overseas in France and Belgium.
Owens will wear. No. 33 for the Silver and Black and will be available for tonight’s game vs. Denver.
a 27 y.0 from the D league probably won't offer much, but ya gotta fill a seat on the pine and have enough guys for practice.

I like the signing. Hes a little older than I wanted, but thats just being picky. Afterall, Gary Neal is basically the same age and hes worked out pretty well. A long, defensive minded SF that can shoot the 3. Perfect. He has less than a 10% chance of making the team for the rest of the season likely (the Danny Green try-out) and less than 5% chance of truly sticking as a rotation guy (even on the fringe). But you might as well roll the dice. Soak up some time behind RJ and let some of the other wings rest.
Now I'd just like to see them sign Marcus Cousin for the remainder of the season as a developmental big and we're all set. Especially with Bonner out for the short-term, Cousin isn't a bad insurance policy.

Not to make any kind of equivocation as a player, but Bowen was a month away from his 30th birthday when he signed with the Spurs. 27 is actually the perfect age for the role he'd be trying to assume, much the same as Neal, as you mentioned.
When you've got a team in contention and have pretty defined needs, acquiring players of the right age and seasoning is a pretty underrated and overlooked aspect. Even though I wasn't a proponent of the Spurs acquiring Jefferson, I actually spoke of the Spurs bypassing the '10 free-agent market and looking to add a player that was in that 27-30 range because they would need them to contribute right away and having someone -- a wing -- in their peak athletic years during the short window they would have to contend, that was exactly the kind of player they needed.
I haven't seen much of Owens, but I like the signing from a positional need and from all of the tangibles (i.e., size, age and athleticism). The Spurs will also have 6 games over the next 10 days to get a decent look at him: Denver, Toronto, New York, New Orleans, Golden State and Utah, all teams that the Spurs could find a matchup to see if he's someone worth keeping.
Edit: Owens is actually 28, which is still ideal in my eyes (1-8-83).

I like this kid. I have a good feeling about him. I don't care how good at basketball you are, you don't get a scholarship to ORU unless you are a high character person. He seems genuinely grateful for the opportunity and eager to prove himself. He looks like a good fit. I wish him luck. Hope he gets a legit shot.
Interesting to know that he's from ORU. I think the last player the Spurs had from Oral Roberts was Greg Sutton.
Agree. About as excited as I could be for a 10-dayer. Remains to be seen how it'll play out on the floor, whether he's a legit NBA player and how he'll fit, but everything from his journey to his measurables, fit the Spurs' mold -- 6-7, time in France and his name is Owens (that's Bowen without the B and plus an S; which I hope doesn't mean he's minus the Bull and plus the).

Not sure, but I'm sure glad he did. ... Not sure if I'm officially getting old or if they've just become played out, but cornrows come off as pretty young, immature these days.
And it's not good when you resemble Lisa Leslie with 'em . . .

Owens joined the Spurs after helping his NBA D-League team, the Tulsa 66ers, win its 10th straight game on Saturday in New Mexico.
He had no doubt about what he had shown the Spurs to merit being called up from the D-League.
“Defense and leadership,” he said. “I was the oldest guy on my Tulsa team, so I think I showed experience and leadership and defense.”

Same here. He strikes me as a reasonably mature and seemingly has the personality to fit in with the rest of the team. I hope he can break the curse of the long line of other swingmen, who weren't able to stick. (i.e. James White, Bobby Jones, Danny Green, etc.)
I wish him luck and can't wait to see him in action.

If they HAVE to fill the 13th spot, why not offer it to some terminally ill kid as part of some "make a wish" type deal.
