    Nicely done for the Nets.

K, for NBA free agency experts, I have some questions.

    1) What's the smart thing for the Nuggets to do now? Trade him to the Knicks?
Keep him till FA? Search for other teams?

    2) What's the smart thing for Melo to do? Be traded somewhere, no matter where, as long as he gets an extension? Wait till FA?

Nuggs can still try to trade him, or if he goes to free agency, set up a sign-and-trade with whoever he's going to sign with (much like what Toronto did with Bosh, or Suns with Amare).

That said, there might be completely new rules in the new CBA, so it's difficult to know with certainty. That's why it's also in Melo's best interest to try to sign something instead of becoming a free agent.

So he can get less money if he waits for free agency?
How so? That is due to the possible lockout?

One thing to keep in mind; not signing an extension does not mean that Melo automatically becomes a free agent this summer. He's on the books for 18.5M next season. He can opt out of that and become a FA or play it out.

If he plays it out, he'd become a FA in the summer of 2012. Others that can become FAs in 2012 include Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams.

Yes. If a hard cap is put in place, then new contracts are going to be capped to that. Could be less money, could be less years, or both.

Wasn't the Nuggets, it was Melo not wanting to go there.

True. But the question is still there if there's going to be a lockout, and a next season. Basically, I don't think anything can be negotiated once the current CBA expires at the end of this season.

Exactly. I think the reports have mislead some people. Like you said, Melo IS NOT a FA next year. He can be if he exercises the option, but people acting like Melo will run the risk of making 0 next year are misinformed.

The size and length of maximum contracts can drastically change in the new CBA. Complete unknown. Thus the reason many believe that Melo will sign the extension even if he doesn't get traded to NY.

Nuggs should take Knick deal if they can get two number ones ...

    Randolph untapped talent
Gallinari gives you a great shooter if you let JR smith walk in the of-season
two first rounders will probably not be bigh picks but nuggs have drafted/traded well (from a talent perspective) Now they need to look at fit and package talent to get another star ...(probably wont be on Melo's level, but still)

and i dont blame russian. that much talent is way too much to give away ...and plus they taking on some ty contracts too ...
