Thats pretty funny about him hearing the wrong name. How did he look in his short stint? I haven't watched the game yet.
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursna...start-falling/LARRY, NOT GARY: With the Raptors having rallied from a 10-0 deficit after tipoff to lead the Spurs 36-32 with 5:41 left in the second quarter, Popovich called a timeout and made some lineup changes, including calling for rookie Larry Owens, suited up for only his second NBA game.
Owens, signed to a 10-day contract on Sunday, misunderstood when Popovich called for “Larry,” thinking he had called for fellow rookie Gary Neal instead.

Is that dude really going to get a jersey signed by Larry Owens?
I've seen enough to believe he warrants a second 10-day. He's got all the makings to be a quality role player at a position of need. Let's see what he's got.
I saw this guy play against the Texas Legends and he's definitely got what it takes to compete at the NBA level, give him a chance.
He has looked pretty good, it would be great if he was an inch or two taller but he is better than Ime so far that is for sure.

10-day Interview - A Moment with Spurs Larry Owens
http://www.poundingtherock.com/2011/...rs-larry-owensWith 5:41 remaining in the first half of Wednesday night's game against the visiting Toronto Raptors, new Spur and well-traveled Larry Owens entered the contest to replace a struggling Gary Neal. Although Owens first official minutes came in clean-up duty against the Denver Nuggets in a Sunday victory, this would be his first real chance to showcase his abilities in meaningful minutes alongside Parker, Jefferson, Blair, and Duncan. In the first minute of his 1:51 of game time, Owens tallied one foul, one defensive board, and displayed solid awareness and hustle on both ends of the court - not a bad first sign for a rookie who has only been with the team for four days.
I, along with Tim Griffin of Spurs Nation and the San Antonio Express-News, caught up with Larry Owens after the game.
I love seeing farm systems work, like how Memphis worked for LA.

..."If I was just sitting around not doing anything, that would have given me a different idea,” Owens said. “I’m grateful they’re still giving me a script and investing the time.”
..."He’s a willing worker,” Popovich said. “He understands what we’ve shown him in the system. He’s not afraid to stick his nose in. He’s done a good job for himself.”
...“If I get minutes, I have to go out there and bust my tail. After that, we’ll see what happens.”
He'll probably get a 2nd 10-day contract and then be gone since James Anderson will be good to go by then....
Did he even get a basket yet?
Yes, Tony dished to him in the corner for 3333333333333 against the Knicks the other night.
If he continues to do well in his second ten day wouldn't shock me if they signed him for the rest of the year.

Well if the Spurs let him go then they're back down to 12 and will be required by league rules to sign one more - regardless of what happens with Anderson. Marcus Cousin or another big might make more sense after Anderson returns. But why not Owens if they like him?
Same here.
As I stated in another post, seeing coaches and players investing time with him and taking such an active interest in getting him acclimated has been a real good sign. It's obvious that this kid has talent and is well-liked.
I like his length and mobility... hate to make comparisons but body wise he does look a bit like Bruce...
Right. Having seen him live, there's no doubt that he has really good length, long arms and good lateral movement. While it's obvious he doesn't have any of the defensive technique and tenacity of the great Bowen, I can see where the physical tools are similar. I liked the way he closes out on shooters and the way he contests shots. Once he gets familiar with the defensive prinicples and rotations, I expect his confidence will rise, along with his game.
One thing working in his favor is that he's definitely got the mindset and at ude to be a good defender, which should go over very well with the head man. He definitely understands that defense will be his calling card.
Thanks for the insight. IIRC correctly he's 28 so was Bruce when he came back to the league signing with the Heat? he just started reaching his peak at that age which is relatively late.
Hopefully Larry is another of those late peaking kind of cases![]()

Spurs have to make decision on 10-dayer Larry Owens by tomorrow. He was allowed to board plane from SF to SLC. Can't be a bad sign. #spurs

You'll remember, however, that Ime Udoka was waived in the middle of a road trip, so Owens isn't safe until he's safe. #spurs
I think he signs a second 10 day contract. Hes intriguing enough for that at least. Whether it goes any further is definitely an unknown.
He definitely appears to have all the physical attributes to succeed. Too often there are quality players with ability that just aren't long enough, quick enough or big enough to succeed. In that respect, Owens looks good enough. It'll all come down to talent and work ethic I think for him.
Something else that might kill his chances are if the Spurs think they have a legitimate chance at picking up a bought out player like a potential McGrady.
The best thing I saw was in the Hornets game, he made a nice post up move against Q. Pondexter.; spun then finished with the left hand. Most of the SF/defender prospects we have signed, didn't show that in their game.
