sons I could understand is this was 2007-08 whenever we truly had one of the worst bench's in the NBA, but have any of you even bothered looking at the stats and the facts? offensively speaking they are nothing to brag about by any means, but defensively they are easily in the top 2 or 3. whenever our bench is in teams struggle to score and last time I checked, defensive is far more important than offense.

    - 2nd in overall defense

    - 2nd in free throw percentage

    - 9th in turnovers

    - 13th in 3pt percentage

I don't think NBA teams use benches anymore. They use chairs. So technically the Hornets do not have a bench. That is a fact.

Hornets currently ranked as the 3rd best defense, according to NBA.com...

That said, it's been inconsistent... like when the Wolves dropped 113 on them.

<Insert excuses for poor benches by a number of non-Hornets teams>

    ...

"But no such argument exists for the lowly Hornets.

It seems ironic now, but the bench was a big plus in the team's 8-0 start. It has done shockingly little of note since then, however. The Hornets, as I wrote on Thursday, have only three players with a PER above 12. That they rank 30th in bench rating, even though they've hardly had any injuries, offers a shocking portent of what might happen if a few ankles twist the wrong way. The starting five have played every game thus far, because the understudies look decidedly unready.

Hornets fans will argue that they at least get a little D from subs Jarrett Jack, Willie Green and Jason Smith, but the Clippers, Heat and Wolves (especially when Corey Brewer plays) can make similar arguments. Additionally, the plus/minus numbers buttress my argument. The Hornets have been horrific any time Chris Paul or David West leaves the floor.

Amazingly, New Orleans could make the playoffs anyway, thanks to Paul's league-leading PER and one of West's best seasons. Having good starters will always matter a lot more than having a strong second unit, which is why the Hornets will win more games than the Raptors this year.

Nonetheless, a good bench can make quite a bit of difference at the margins. San Antonio, for instance, has the best record in the league and looks like a le threat, but the Hornets are likely one-and-done in the postseason. Do the math, and the benches explain most of the difference."

If it's any consolation, I actually predicted Miami's bench to be far and away the worst just based on my own subjective observations.

I was also surprised to see Boston ranked so low. They've always been the poster boy for "deep" teams among the NBA's elite.

The bench will improve as Thornton and Pondexter are starting to get consistent minutes.

The starting 5 has not started every game this season.

One reason might be due to all the injuries. A few of our backups have had to play starter mins, which skews th stats slightly.

Miami has been missing their 2 best bench players for virtually the entire season..the Celtics can now slide Shaq over to the bench, and they will eventually add West to the bench..

Both teams will have good enough benches in the playoffs..
