Reading that Forbes' article got me thinking...how much bang for the buck did any (or all) of the Spurs finals teams have to squeeze out to win the championship?

I guess league ranking would be more accurate than actual dollar amounts..

Weren't we in 03, 05 and 07 just under salary cap, as we "always" were until last season?

In 07 the Spurs where just barely OVER the cap.
Thus begin the whole Scola saga..............
    I think in 05 also
But we are talking about very small amounts
    One source on amounts paid

    2006/07 Season:

    - Knicks = $45,142,002
    - Mavericks = $7,204,968
    - Nuggets = $2,022,418
    - Timberwolves = $998,536
    - Spurs = $196,082

Given salary escalation it's probably the '99 team.

    David Robinson $14,841,000
    Sean Elliott $5,333,000
    Charles Smith $4,375,143
    Will Perdue $4,373,000
    Tim Duncan $3,413,000
    Avery Johnson $3,000,000
    Antonio Daniels $2,472,000
    Steve Kerr $1,774,000
    Mario Elie $1,750,000
    Jerome Kersey $1,000,000
    Malik Rose $425,000
    Andrew Gaze $350,000
    Gerald King $287,500
    Brandon Williams $287,500

    TOTAL $43,681,143

If anyone wants to see where that ranks among all the teams, basketball-reference.com has the details.

In terms of 'bang for the buck', the 04-05 team was clearly the best value. The '99 team had the payroll above against a salary cap of 30M. The '05 team had a payroll of 47.2M against a salary cap of 43.9M.

Since the implementation of the 2005 CBA, the Spurs have been well over the cap (by 9M-22M) every year. The numbers cited above are for teams over the luxury tax threshold. The Spurs were one of five teams that paid tax that season. The other 25 teams were below the tax.

There have been five seasons under the current luxury tax system and the Spurs have been above the tax threshold three times, one of eight teams to pay some tax at least three times. Fifteen franchises have never paid the tax.
