Ayn Rand Railed Against Government Benefits, But Grabbed Social Security and Medicare When She Needed Them

    http://www.alternet.org/story/149721/

Ayn Rand was not only a schlock novelist, she was also the progenitor of a sweeping “moral philosophy” that justifies the privilege of the wealthy and demonizes not only the slothful, undeserving poor but the lackluster middle-classes as well.

Her books provided wide-ranging parables of "parasites," "looters" and "moochers" using the levers of government to steal the fruits of her heroes' labor.

In the real world, however, Rand herself received Social Security payments and Medicare benefits under the name of Ann O'Connor (her husband was Frank O'Connor).

As Michael Ford of Xavier University's Center for the Study of the American Dream wrote, “In the end, Miss Rand was a hypocrite but she could never be faulted for failing to act in her own self-interest.”

    ===============

So Ann O'Connor in the end was herself a parasite, looter, moocher.

The entire Repug/conservative/libertarian/VRWC "philosophy", articulated and typified by their demi-goddess Ann O'Connor, is one huge, self-serving steaming pile of false bull .

When Ayn Rand spawns such followers as Alan Greenspan that's enough of a shining example of the world of good her influence has had on this country.

I'm pretty sure no self-respecting intellectual would ever champion Ayn Rand as an inspiration. Not sure why this is news, she sucks.

Did TJ ever say one thing (against slavery) while doing the opposite (holding slaves)?

Did Ann O'Conner say one thing (parasites," "looters" and "moochers" use the levers of government to steal the fruits of her heroes' labor) while doing the opposite (Ann herself looting govt dollars, probably much more than she ever put in)?

Tommy's influence actually moved the country forward.

Ann O'Connor's "philosophy" has moved the country backward 80 years to the Roaring 20s and even back to the 19th century Robber Barons.

TJ = AR = typcially, totally, predictably false equivalence bull .

Who said liberty is a discredited argument?

Did someone use that fact as an argument to reinstate slavery?

    Link, please.

No fish easier to shoot than RandFish in their own septic barrel

    --Rand Paul

Charges: Nicknamed and molded after a writer whose sheer intellectual repugnance spawned an entire generation of thinly-veiled Social Darwinists. He tried to equate racial discrimination with “free speech,” saying that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was tantamount to big government regulation. Cried, “Medicare is socialized medicine!” while hypocritically deriving half of his ophthalmology income from Medicaid and Medicare. Portrayed criticism of BP’s little “accident” as an “un-American” symptom of our “blame-game society.” And then there was that befuddling college prank where he and another secret-frat dildo tied up a girl, blindfolded her, made her do bong hits, dragged her to a creek bed and forced her to swear allegiance to “Aqua Buddha.” Way to go, Kentucky, he’s your Senator. You embarrass us all, you curb-stomping apes, for so many reasons, Ark-related and not.

Aggravating factor: “Well, the thing is, we’re all interconnected. There are no rich. There are no middle class. There are no poor.”

    --Pamela Geller
Charges: The Woodward to Orly Taitz’s Bernstein, publisher of the mendacious blog Atlas Shrugs and co-founder of the hate group Stop Islamization of America. She was the bigoted fountainhead of hysteria over the “Ground Zero Mosque,” which is neither a mosque, nor located at Ground Zero, but rather a former, and totally sacred, Burlington Coat Factory. Her pathological falsehoods include, but are not limited to, the claims that the Bosnian Genocide was actually a clever Muslim mass-suicide/sympathy campaign, Obama—the undercover Muslim—is the love child of Malcolm X, his mom was a porno worker, and that Jewish Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan is a Nazi. This lunatic makes Ann Coulter seem the very model of civility, reason and grace.

Aggravating factor: “I don’t know where it is in America that you can’t make jokes or make fun.”

(but you've got to give Gellar a little slack. She's genetically Jewish but not practicing. That wouldn't stop AIPAC from funding the Islamophobe except she also a Holocaust denier.)

    and lots more take-downs here:

More than 200 years since slavery was written into the U.S. cons ution, its racist legacy remains--and the words of abolitionist Frederick Douglass remain true: "Without struggle, there can be no progress." Only a struggle that shakes the foundation of U.S. society can end racism.
It's an old tired argument and you're obviously pretending if you say you've never heard anyone make the connection before. Still I will spell it out for you if I must.

Cons ution = racist, therefore American version of liberty = racist = lie = discredited.

Makes me feel sad that she championed your peoples fight against arab agressors.

Why couldn't the Nazi's just selectively kill only the small percentage of dumbass jews instead of the 98 percent of the jewish population.

Thanks asswipe, you're the reason for the Jude's misfortune. Eat your own ass and die.

Ayn Rand inspired some of Rush's best early albums, so that makes up for anything else you could say about her.

I wonder when the Gold Bubble will burst.

I remember a time it went to $800+ years back, just to drop to around $300.

If one really is worried about hyperinflation, buy stocks in a large company.

I did a rundown on the performance of gold versus Ford Stock in about 2007 or 2008.

Buy gold in 1980 for $200, end up with $800 in 2007

Buy Ford stock in 1980 for $200 end up with $57,000 in 2007.

Probably got one or more of those numbers not exact, due to memory, but I definitely remember the scope of the difference.

I doubt Igotnuthinkot could define "hyperinflation", anyways.

If I was "rich," I would buy enough gold as not to lose my living comfort if the market did in fact fail. However, I feel safer with my money in a diverse set of mutual funds than any where else.

As for a single stock... never rely on one example. The stock market as a whole, has outperformed most other investments, long term. Like climate change, to pick a small segment of years, or one location, is meaningless.

Yup. Even if one were to pick a different stock, or group of stocks, the ultimate principles hold true when compared to gold.

Ownership of a series of positive cash flows will trump static gold every time over the long run.

If one is really worried about the US economy, invest in something like Coke that gets you a lot of play in other countries with better growth potential.

Wow, I almost took the bait on that one. Good stuff, thanks for playing.

Ayn Rand sucks my fountainhead. She had her Objectivist decade already, it was the 80s and they sucked too.
