Manu and Duncan named All-Star reserves, Spurs send big contingent back to LA
    by Andrew A. McNeill
    48 Minutes of

The NBA All-Star reserves were announced on Thursday night and the suspense is over, Tim Duncan’s All-Star streak is over. Duncan, along with Manu Ginobili, was named as one of the West’s reserves.

Ginobili isn’t much of a surprise, he’s been as much of an MVP candidate as this balanced Spurs team could have. Duncan, well, he’s a bit of a stretch. His numbers this season aren’t great (13.6 points and 9.4 rebounds), so he basically gets in on reputation.

Second season as a starter, second all-star game for Ginobili, coincidence?

Note to Pop: Start Tim instead of Yao, let's be selfish this one time.

Its easy to say Love should have made an Allstar , but who would you replace him with ?, it's contradictory to say i agree Duncan should be in, and Love as well. If Love was selected the most likely player he would have beaten for a spot is TD. not Dirk ,gasol or Grifin

Nice to see Duncan and Manu, but too bad TP did not make it. He deserved it.

    Boston with 4 players
And no Kevin Love? That's a joke. He should have been all star. Unbelievable how underrated he his. He has been beastin for 2 years now and still so unnoticed.

Anyway, let's get this whole ASG media circus over with and continue with the important season after that.

Will he pick TD? Who else will he?

Hopefully it's Gasol, and he plays him 48 minutes

Stern names Love as Yao's replacement.

Good he really deserves it. A joke if he wasn't there.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love has been named by NBA Commissioner David Stern to replace injured West All-Star center Yao Ming (stress fracture, left ankle) of the Houston Rockets in the 2011 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. This is Love's first All-Star Game selection.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, who earned the right to coach the West squad by virtue of the Spurs clinching the best record in the conference through games played Feb. 6, will determine who replaces Yao in the starting lineup.

Kings notes: Westphal says Spurs' Duncan deserves All-Star nod
    By Jason Jones
    Sacramento Bee

The debate over the NBA All-Star rosters is an annual exercise in figuring out who doesn't belong on the team.

With the Western Conference loaded with frontcourt players, some of that criticism is aimed at San Antonio big man Tim Duncan, who is averaging career lows in points, rebounds and minutes played.

Duncan entered Friday's game averaging 13.5 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Still, Duncan was voted a reserve by coaches. And Duncan has the support of Kings coach Paul Westphal.

"I don't really announce my picks, but I definitely voted for Duncan," Westphal said Friday before the Kings hosted the Spurs.

Duncan is listed as a forward on the fan ballot, but Westphal voted for Duncan as a center. It should be noted Duncan is 6-foot-11, but the Spurs still list him as a forward while 6-7 DeJuan Blair is their starting center.

But Duncan opens games jumping against the opposing team's center.

"Coaches don't have to vote what the ballot says for position," Westphal said. "He's a center, and I don't care what anybody thinks, he's a center."

Winning also matters to Westphal. That's a reason why Duncan has Westphal's support. The Spurs have the best record in the NBA.

"Sometimes a player can be so dominant on a losing team, he needs to be on the All-Star team, but winning is a very important component of how a player gets rated," Westphal said. "The idea is to win games, and I think Duncan is magnificent at helping his team win games."

Coaches go on record about all-star votes
    Tom Enlund
    Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

...Duncan and teammate Manu Ginobili were among the Western reserves, and some viewed the selection of Duncan as something of a lifetime achievement award since his individual statistics are down this season. On the other hand, it could be argued that since the Spurs have the best record in the league, maybe Spurs point guard Tony Parker should have been selected also.

After all, if the Celtics deserve four all-stars, don't the Spurs deserve three?

"You look at our record right now and he's a big part of that," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Duncan. "I'm sure he's moved that the coaches recognized what he's done this year to help this team be where it is, so I'm thrilled for him."

Love was surprised that Duncan was chosen.

"I thought Blake would get in because fans want to see dunks," said Love. "Not taking anything away from (Duncan). His averages are down. He's not the most exciting player. I didn't see that happening, but the Spurs' record and the coaches' emphasis on winning  . . .  I guess they had to take another player from the Spurs."

Love added that he didn't want to get too bitter since he realized Minnesota's record counted against him.

"I know winning plays a big factor," he said.

    Correct.

He basically said "I should have made it over Duncan and he only made it because of the Spurs' record and the coaches feeling obligated to reward that".

The more I hear out of Love, the more I dislike him. What an arrogant punk. Who takes an unprovoked shot at an all-time great on the best team in the league? He's on a joke team and has had less than one season where he's put up big numbers and he thinks he's something special all of a sudden.

I don't get the players in this league and many of the on air people. Guys are too scared to take shots at an arrogant, selfish puke like Bryant (even Garnett; people in the league are doing it now, but on air people don't), but relentlessly criticize Duncan. You'd think it would be the opposite.

Can't say it came off all that great, but Love has been very reverential towards TD in the past. He's actually said something along the lines of him being the guy he looked to most or one of the guys he really patterned his game after because of how he played the game close to the floor and with so much intelligence, or something to that effect.

Tim hasn't had the typical All-Star year, but it's a joke to say he's not one of the six best bigmen in the West or to suggest that the cir stances haven't dictated the numbers rather than the Spurs are winning in spite of his play, numbers.

Like I said before, Tim and the Spurs have themselves to blame for a lot of this because they insisted on him being called a 4 in '09 and '10. He's been the team's center since 2009 and though it may have cost him his starting streak a year or two early, there's no doubt he would have made the team as a center this year.

Yeah, I know he has. But he is arrogant, just in a subtle way. Puke was probably the wrong word, though. He's no James or Bryant.

People lump all the West bigs in together, but they shouldn't. The league differentiates between PF and C. Out of legit All-Star candidates, only Duncan and Gasol can be viewed as C's. That's why, even for those who don't value winning highly and are obsessed with scoring average, Duncan is a no brainer selection.

You're right. But he made it as a C anyway (even though he wasn't listed on the ballot as such) and that's how all those questioning his selection should view it. He wasn't competing with Griffin, Love, Aldridge, Randolph, Odom and West, but rather Chandler, Okafor and Nene.

I agree. But in all honesty, I don't even view Gasol as much of a center. Maybe if he ages like Duncan, becomes less mobile and puts on some weight I could bring myself to call him that, but he only really finds himself playing the position by the letter rather than his play.

Duncan wasn't a center when people were trying to call him that back in the day but I'd have a easier time coming to that conclusion in his case. At least he really was a pivot and anchor on both ends of the floor. But, again, he wasn't. That's just how hard it is for me to call Pau a center.

One thing is sure, whatever his stats are there is no way I pick Love.

Tim Duncan’s legend grew with his 13th consecutive All-Star Game appointment Thursday night. He has not missed an All-Star Game since he entered the league (there was no game in 1999 because of a labor stoppage). Although his selection by the Western Conference coaches as one of seven reserves was made necessary because fans did not vote him in as a starter after 11 consecutive years of doing so, Duncan matched Bob Cousy, Jerry West and Shaquille O’Neal as the only players in league history to be named to the All-Star squad in each of their first 13 seasons.

“Unexpected,” Duncan said. “Obviously, a great honor.”

    Duncan deserves his All-Star spot
    By Austin Burton
    Dime

On his way to four NBA championships, three Finals MVPs and two league MVPs, Tim Duncan has become fairly adept at good timing. He’s the 7-footer who steps out and hits a three-pointer when his team needs a trey. He’s the alleged slowpoke who darts across the lane like a jaguar and blocks a shot when his team needs a stop. He’s the star who plays his best in the biggest games — like posting 21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists and 8 blocks in a decisive Game Six of the NBA Finals.

So when Duncan was named to his 14th All-Star Game last week amidst cries of “snub” for Western Conference counterparts LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love (later named an injury replacement), Zach Randolph and Lamar Odom, you figured he would use his next timely opportunity — i.e., a game against the Lakers on national TV the same night as the All-Star announcement — to silence any doubts that he should be headed to the midseason showcase.

That didn’t happen. While the Spurs won the game, Duncan had a modest 8 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. He shot 3-for-12 from the field, including missing a fadeaway jumper on the last possession that Antonio McDyess tipped in at the buzzer to save San Antonio.

It got worse after that, as the other All-Star snubs responded with glittering stat lines. Z-Bo hung 22 points and 17 boards on Houston, while Aldridge scored a career-high 42 points against Chicago. Odom, meanwhile, posted a 20-point, 20-rebound line two days before All-Star reserves were named. By now, the sentiment has become clear from Portland to Memphis: Duncan only got in on reputation and doesn’t deserve to be an All-Star.

But he does. And not on some lifetime-achievement, thanks-for-the-memories, one-more-for-the-road farewell gift. Duncan is still one of the 12 best players in the West, and one of the most valuable players in the League this season.

The Spurs have the best record in the NBA at 42-8, six and a half games ahead of the Mavericks. Duncan is their on-court lynchpin, off-court leader, and still the key that makes the San Antonio engine go. His numbers are down from his norm — 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.9 blocks per game — and not as impressive as those posted by Aldridge (21.6 ppg, 9.1 rpg) or Randolph (20.0 ppg, 13.2 rpg) or even Odom (15.3 ppg, 9.5 rpg), L.A.’s sixth man. And Duncan is not leading the Spurs in scoring or in shots during crunch time.

Watch the games, though. When it really comes down to it, Duncan is the Spurs’ first option. At worst, he is the second option behind Manu Ginobili, who also made the 2011 All-Star team. And defensively, TD is the middle linebacker in San Antonio. The two best players on the best team in the League making the All-Star Game is nothing out of the ordinary.

When ranking “Who’s the best?” in office arguments and barbershop debates, stats often take a backseat to team success. Kobe trumps LeBron in the eyes of many because he has more rings. Same goes for D-Wade over LeBron, Bill Russell over Wilt Chamberlain, Magic over Stockton, etc. But funny how, when it comes to All-Star, it’s all about numbers. The immediate reaction to K-Love getting snubbed was loud enough that you’d think the country was full of Minnesota fans, and the arguments for Aldridge are still loud and long.

Where does Duncan fit in? If we are really celebrating the best the NBA has to offer on Feb. 20 in L.A., Duncan is the face of the best team in the League. He is their leader on defense, their iden y on offense. That should be enough for justify an All-Star spot.

It's so ing funny that the bulk of the posters here couldn't care less (so they say) that the media shuns the team, but they get all butt hurt when the players don't make the ASG.

o? It's a popularity contest, and popularity is fueled by media exposure. Small market teams have to have media exposure to compete with the large markets in revenue and popularity.

Flying under the radar is fine, just don't be two faced about it and when you aren't detected by radar.
