Per recent Time article. It would assume how its worded that this has been an accurate amount for some time now. Remember, this is JUST the military.

Do we REALLY need to give that much aid for the middle east when we're talking about SS and Health Care? Wonder what it would take to stop policing the rest of the world and focus on at home......

You ARE focusing on at home. It always baffles me how people fail to understand how important diplomacy is with regards to national security and American interests abroad. War isn't the only means of getting what you want.

Subsidizing the mid east to keep the status quo in order to protect the interest of our oil supply?

Tell me, what Govt. aspect do you use/appreciate that you would like to cut in order to keep funding foreign military's?

Do you want to continue being the world's police?

First of all, you'll notice I'm not American, hence the flag. Second of all, nobody appointed the US "World Police". You are however its most powerful nation with ties to and businesses with almost every nation in the world. It wouldn't be in your best interests not to mention completely unrealistic to expect the US to simply "let the world be". Plus if you think this is subsidizing you're being naive. Anyone who thinks the US is getting nothing from this is either ignorant or deluded.

I don't particularly like how the US "polices" the world in a lot of instances, but I'm not in the camp with those who think the world OR the US would benefit from them not doing so at all.

Haven't you heard? The GOP transformed from not being-the-world-police party to the liberators/ nation building party... of course their platform flipped flopped when a dem was in office at the time..

It would be hilarious if current day Egypt went to war with Israel again and they both used American provided weapons to fight each other.

No . Egypt has the 4th largest fleet of F-16's in the world and actually has a factory producing M1A1 Abrams tanks.

The Palestine Papers, or How Everything You Thought You Knew about the Peace Process Was Wrong

And that's why Netanyahu told his ministers, "We are closely monitoring events in Egypt and the region and are making efforts to preserve its security and stability." He knows that a dictatorial Egypt guarding Israel's southern flank is the best insurance for continuing the occupation or coddling the PA into selling out its people. Without Mubarak or a likeminded subs ute - perhaps, they pray, as the situation in Egypt slips out of control, Mohamed ElBaradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will maintain the peace treaty - a reconfiguration of the regional map looms, and with it will come an end to the Israeli occupation.

For that reason, among others, Israel and America are both hoping that Mubarak is able to beat back or tamp down his people's revolutionary surge, or at least prevent any real change in the matrix of power in Egypt. As revolution and counterrevolution duel in Tahrir Square, the outcome of the struggle is far from determined. But one can be sure that Israel, the PA and America alike are watching closely and intervening as they can, desperate to put the regional system of Israeli-American domination in stasis, and worrying anxiously that the revolution in Egypt will succeed and bring that system crashing down.

Egypt is strategically important. Maintaining ties is probably more important than saving a few bucks there. That said, I'm basically sympathetic to reversing the post WWII trend.

Re: $3.5 million US AID spent per day on Eqypt's Military

Do we REALLY need to give that much aid for the middle east when we're talking about SS and Health Care?
Is it that too much to spend on Egypt? Would the proper level of aid be zero dollars?

We give it to them as a bribe in exchange for access to their air space and strategic military access points. Maintaining an empire is expensive.

I dunno, apparently if your not from this country and don't pay taxes you have a better grasp on what the US needs to do with their dollar than I do.

Pay taxes and so forth. Is proof of these somehow required to have a valid and respectable opinion around here?

Did you really just play the native card on me? Bold.

You remind me of a lot of those mean Texas mfers I grew up with back in the 70 and 80s. Mean as , but definitely more bark than bite. You're way off with the insinuation I'm foreign.

(Putting distance between yourself and what you directly said to me, is probably a smart move, even though it's also essentially a wuss move.
