KSAT has an article about a group lobbying Texas lawmakers to put Texas independence to a public vote.

Is it just me or are there like a million reasons that would be a bad idea?

I mean what would happen to all of the military jobs in San Antonio alone? Sure there aren't as many as there used to be but we still have a few bases, a hospital, etc.

Would the United States want to keep them here if we secede?

What about things like Social Security, and the other hundreds of programs funded or administered by the federal government?

Would we have to start paying income tax?

I'm sure some of you can come up with a bunch of other reasons. I know it will never happen, but are the people that want it to happen just nut jobs?

If Texas seceded it wouldn't be able to do its field trips into Iraq and Afghanistan any more.

Well, they say that every country inevitably becomes corrupted and needs a change. The power becomes more and more concentrated, after enough time has passed, which leads to injustice and wealth inequality.

I guess their reasoning is that it wouldn't be so bad if the entire country started over.

Not sure what other reasons they have

Those have been around a long time. I think I even had a "Texas Secede" t-shirt when I was a kid.

The difference obviously is that back then it was a joke about how Texans like to think that we're special/different etc, and now it seems to be about dropping out of civil society and not a joke for some of our pointy headed brethren.

We do seem to have an unbridgeable gap between the haves & have nots in this country. Unbridgeable because there's no real opposition to the market uber alles, race-to-the-bottom politics. And, as we've seen with Obama, elections don't change anything.

Isn't it strange that the vast majority of Americans work for a living and there's not one representative of us in the media or government?

Have you ever seen the film "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" (1939) starring Jimmy Stewart?

The problem has gotten a lot worse in the ensuing 71 years

Nope, that one's on my list of flicks to see for sure. There's a lot to learn from that era, I'm fascinated by the 1930s.

Recently watched an inspiring do entary do entary about the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), part of the PBS American Experience series.

Intellectually its an interesting thing to contemplate. We would be a top 10 economy in the world as a country. With our multi-cultural blend we might be able to make some sense of immigration and drug laws. Don't look at it as some crazy redneck thing but rather an opportunity to refine some of the original founding US philosophies and dump all the Washington graft, bloat, and corruption.

Of course, you'd have pretty much no military except the Guard... next to the country with the world's biggest military, which you just seceded from...

As well, do you really think that you'd be getting rid of graft/bloat/corruption? It'd just be on a smaller scale.

Secession doesn't even pass as a threat because it just won't work. The idea that it could lead to anything other than a cluster for every Texan is on par with the 9/11 inside job folk.

Will Rick Perry give us a few months to decide if individuals want to live in the country of Texas or the US? What about our passports for international travel? How would immigration work? Would businesses still want to stay in Texas? Will the US even want to do business with Texas?

red-staters hate foreign aid, so when TX becomes a foreign country, they must refuse every single dollar, for any reason from DC.

Perry can't even refuse Medicaid from the Feds now. Throw all the farm, road, oil, gas, etc, etc, etc federal tax breaks, subsidies, Texas country would have to raise all kinds of taxes dramatically.

TX could spend $100Bs building their border fence, ALL AROUND THE STATE. The Great Wall Of Texas.

TX likes to think it can go it alone, but without the US and it's military behind us, the narco terror of the failed Mexican state would INSTANTLY jump our border in a tsunami of violence. I don't think the Guard would even exist. While it is beholden to the state, those contracts are signed binding you to the US military.

rather than once again just taking clear party lines once more for the most part, lets just entertain the idea.

most of the discussion is not centered around trade but the full faith and credit clause would obviously no longer apply. we would be subject to american tariffs and more than likely we would do the same.

that would be the most important caveat in this idea and i have no idea what that would entail nor really how to begin a discussion on it.

its why it owuld more than likely cause civil war.

as long as we had a peace treaty with american defense of texas would not be a huge consideration from the global perspective for the same reason canada does not have to worry about it overly much.

    'narcoterror' was funny though.

i am to the point where i believe that the political system which all too many just eat up. something drastic needs ot be done and although a civil war and all the deaths that would result from something like this prohibit my support of this I can certainly understand where the want of something like this comes from.

pigeonholing of texans as tumbleweed having mindless idiots notwithstanding.

"peace treaty with american defense of texas"

... USA should move all US military bases (and civilian support) out of TX, and send TX an annual bill for assuring TX defense, including MX border defense.

And move NASA out, too, if the Repugs don't kill NASA completely.
