TRIBUNE: How many of the league’s teams are operating in the red?
SILVER: Approximately three-quarters of the teams are not making money.
I found that kind of surprising, wasn't aware that so few teams in the NBA were profitable. With an NBA lockout looming, and many team franchises apparently teetering on the edge, what's going to happen?

After all the awful contracts the owners just gave out last offseason, it's amazing they can blame this on the players.

Translation: We're locking the spoiled brats out until they realize how good they've got it. Player salaries have to come down from $2.3 Billion to around $1.6 or $1.7 billion for it to come close to being fair. Surely, the owner of the team should expect to make as much as one of the higher paid employees--not even the highest in this case. That means a 25% cut in players salaries--it could be a long lockout.

they way teams spend so lavishly it's really no surprise..private team jets, limo's to take them around everywhere once they hit the ground, probably have driver's, eating at expensive ass restaurants every night probably all paid for by the team, etc.

wonder how many guys will bolt for europe?
I'm pretty sure that FIBA and the NBA honor each other's contracts, so unless a player is a FA, teams in Europe won't sign them. It's just a work stoppage. What happens when the lockout ends, and a player is under both an NBA and a FIBA contract? Awkward...

    Way too many teams,
    way too many games,
    way too expensive tickets,
    B2Bs are an abomination,
    way too little player/coach/staff talent.

    82 x 30 = 2460 games of which 2000 are meaningless, unwatchable garbage.

Classic business scam: sell the tiest possible product for the highest possible price.

    Prove it.

Most teams are losing money. Guaranteed contracts, luxury tax, poor attendance.

Does anyone know for sure? I know car companies cry woe, cause they say they "lost" money, but in reality, they set a benchmark for themselves, like say, earn 250 million dollars, and if they only earn 200 million, they say they lost 50 million. Or are they really losing money?

It's more like maybe half of the teams. When true financial companies do their valuations, it shows that a lot of these numbers the owners report (losses) aren't really true:

They should cut the guaranteed contracts. Or make it usual that every contract has team options every 2nd year.

And cut the average salary. Max for the stars is ok, but there is no need that the average player get 5-6 million a year. Sure the players will argue that they have a small window of time/career to earn the money but they piss it away anyway, so doesnt matter if they earn 2 or 6 million.

Are you sure that's accurate? It sounds like you may be counting some games twice, IE if the Sixers play the Nets, that's one game but you counted it as 1 for the Nets and 1 for the Sixers.

Don't think of the teams that spend a ton like BOS, NY. The model for making money with an NBA franchise was set down 20+ years ago by Sterling: spend the minimum salary amount and let players walk away. You get more back from the TV deal than you spend. Of course you constantly lose, but if you look at it as a business, you're winning.

    My guesses would include:
    LAC
    MEM
    NOH
3-4 more teams that spend light.

Yeah, but you'd think those teams that go deep into the playoffs are making a good amount off playoff home games and merchandise.
