Provo • A source with close connections to the program has confirmed that BYU star Brandon Davies was dismissed from the Cougars’ nationally ranked basketball team after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, a violation of the school’s honor code.
Davies, a sop re from Provo High, acknowledged his transgression to BYU officials on Monday.
Tuesday, the school owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Davies had been dismissed from the team but was being allowed to remain in school while his situation was under review by the Honor Code Office.
BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Davies’ suspension from the team was for the remainder of the season and that his future at the school has yet to be determined.
A source told The Tribune that Davies is “extremely remorseful, heartbroken” but has accepted the punishment doled out by the school.
Wednesday afternoon, the school confirmed that Davies’ dismissal was not due to something that is criminal in nature, but would not acknowledge the specific portion of the honor code that he violated, per school policy.
Among other things, the honor code forbids students from engaging in premarital sex, and admonishes them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.”
Davies was averaging 11.1 points, third-most on the team, and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game for the 27-2 Cougars, ranked No. 3 in both major college basketball polls.
Searches of various police department and court records Wednesday morning by The Tribune did not reveal any brushes with the law for the 19-year-old Davies, who started in 26 of 27-2 BYU’s 29 games this season.
Jenkins said Tuesday that the school became aware of Davies’ honor code violation on Monday, the same day the Cougars moved up to No. 3 in both polls.
I agree this is some neat NBA news. Good for him tho.
Should have gone straight anal like the rest of the BYU student body. They might've let him back for the tourney if he did that. The mormons don't one bit tolerate the breaking of their flock's hymens though, tbh.
What kinda bull school is this??? A college where you're not allowed to . What's the point in going to college if you can't bang dem hoezzz
Dude...can't even drink tea there. Curious, are there any Chinese Mormons or British Mormons? How can they have tea time if they can't even drink tea there?
Why would anyone with any basketball talent attend BYU? They are a bunch of wackos.
If I were Fredette, I'd go to the AD and say, "either he gets reinstated in time for March Madness, or I blackball this school once I graduate and make it impossible for BYU to ever get good recruits again."
It's ing Utah, what do you expect? Church of Christ school in Utah.
There's no in way a white guy who violates this re ed honor code would be suspended for the rest of the year.
So the question is...who ratted them out? It's not like dude just woke up one morning and decided to tell the school he was laying pipe on the lady.
I thought this was an Onion article. Utah is a piece of hypocritical Mormon trash. that waste of a state. And Mormons (oh wait you can't).
Well, My Lobos are ing the whole team for the 2nd time this season so I guess they can all quit the team.
lol mormons. What a re ed group of people.
Don't get me wrong, I hate BYU and understand your sentiment about mormons/Utah... But hypocritical? There's plenty of hypocrisy in Utah, sure, but in this case, isn't the school standing by its honor code in detriment to their own athletic interests the opposite of hypocrisy?
I mean, it's a dumbass rule, but they're displaying the integrity that goes along with enforcing it, no? It would be hypocritical if they let him get away with something they wouldn't let another student get away with.
IMO it's somewhat hypocritical to forbid premarital sex but allow 50 year old men to have multiple 13 year old wives.
Yeah, well BYU isn't the ed up DA's office.
Actually its a different sect that allows polygamy if I'm right. I think mainstream Mormonism isn't in to that stuff. I could be wrong. I was wrong before like when I said the Suns would be fine without Amare.
