Agree with him. So does Pop, Manu, Duncan, Parker and the rest of the Spurs.![]()
Dirk says Lakers have the hammer: With all due respect to the San Antonio Spurs , Dirk Nowitzki doesn’t see them as the No. 1 obstacle in the Western Conference.
In talking about how the Mavericks are a quiet contender in the West, Nowitzki said he believes the road to an NBA championship goes through LA, not down I-35.
“Under the radar is always good,” he said of the Mavericks’ position. “I think the Lakers to me are still the heavy favorite in the West. After that, there are a bunch of teams bundled up.”
Why the Lakers and not the Spurs, who own a big edge in the chase for top seed?
“They’ve won two [ les] in a row, they’re long and they’ve got the same players and they’ve got the best player in the world,” Nowitzki said, referring to Kobe Bryant.

Lakers are the only elite team to remain whole. The original (starting six) is the same as last season. No other serious contender did that.
Barnes returning and a gaggle of 7-footers (including Ratliff & Smith) up & down the 15 man roster will come in handy.
Just playing into LAL overhyped heads before Mavs kick their asses in the 2nd round - smart play Dirk (then the Mavs will of course choke to the SAS)
The Lakers are the goods.
Very reliable opinion because Dirk has won multiple championships-oh wait....
True, but, 6-5 looks mucho better than 6-3.
I'd say it's more reliable than a bunch of gnsf sitting on ST.
I love how everyone on other teams keeps telling Kobe he's the best ever. Kinda funny how when manipulation is done properly, no one can ever tell.
Defending champs are always the team to beat.
Do you remember, we were sittin' there, by the water? You put your arm around me for the fist time. You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter. You are the best thing that's ever been mine.
disagree scro
hard to argue with the fat who's sat on his couch and watched his team win 4 rings as opposed to a ringless Hall of Fame player
Lakers are no longer a dominant team, but they certainly deserve the respect that a 2-time defending NBA champ commands..they should still be considered the favorites in the West, but they're no longer a step above the other contenders, which has been evident all season long..
