Former Red Sox hurler Curt Schilling is finally pitching the first game from 38 Studios. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, previously known as codename Project Mercury, is an epic open-world RPG coming in 2011.
Publisher EA Partners and 38 Studios made the announcement today, two days before the developer is set to world premier the new game at San Diego Comic-Con. The game, led by a creative all-star team of Spawn artist Todd McFarlane, best-selling fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, and Elder Scrolls III and IV lead designer Ken Rolston, is billed as a classic RPG with a new level of intense action combat never before seen in the genre.
"Reckoning is a great representation of how a team of incredibly talented and creative people with expertise in different areas can come together and complement each other so well," said Jen MacLean, CEO of 38 Studios. "We are thrilled to be developing an open-world RPG under the leadership of one of the greatest RPG designers in the industry, with creative direction by one of the most iconic artists of our time, set in a rich universe imagined by one of the top fantasy genre authors in the world. We can't wait to share the first details of this universe we have been so dedicated to building over the past few years."
38 Studios describes Reckoning as a single-player RPG that sets players on a journey to unlock the mysteries of Amalur, a magical world filled with strange landscapes, exotic cities, colorful characters, and terrifying creatures.
"In Reckoning, we started with Bob and Todd's exceptional Kingdoms of Amalur game setting and imagery," said Ken Rolston, Lead Designer at Big Huge Games, a subsidiary of 38 Studios. "On that foundation we built the open-world exploration, vast narrative and character customization fans expect from the best RPGs. And we've added something new that we've always wanted from the genre -- a fast-paced, graphically stimulating action combat experience with fluid control and immersive, discoverable gameplay fans haven't seen before in other fantasy RPGs."
The first trailer for the game, directed by McFarlane, will debut at Comic-Con on Thursday. We'll have it up for you as soon as it's available. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs.

I'm merely excited because of the dream team thats making this game.
R.A. Salvatore doing the story.
McFarlane doing the graphical styling.
and Ken rolston doing the game design.
It's basically the Miami Heat of the Game industry.
Epic win.
highly, highly doubt those are in-game shots.
pre-rendered videos are nice, and so are pictures, but they are never what actual gameplay looks like.
doubt all you want.
If the dev posted them on the official website as actual screenshots, then there is no reason to doubt their validity until the first "actual gameplay" video comes out.
They actually look like photoshopped in-game. Anything pre-rendered is bound to have anti-alias and better quality. Look at that grass texture. It's pretty ordinary and jaggy.
That's the way it normally is in-game.
Yeah, if you look close enough, they are definately not pre-rendered or CGI. If it is, its REALLY sloppy and nothing I would expect, quality wise, from some of the most talented people in their respected fields in our generation.
I have no doubt that they are genuine in-game screenshots and not some doctored CGI or pre-rendered effect.
One just has to look at the CGI cinematic trailer. It's nothing compared to a Blizzard CGI video but its definately not crap either. If they can do that video, I would think they would have crisper pre-rendered screenshots if thats the case.
Call me a homer, because I am, when it comes to R.A. Salvatore and todd McFarlane.... I do not doubt them at all. Salvatore is by far my favorite author and I have always loved McFarlanes artistic style and after Ken Rolston came out with Morrowind and Oblivion as head designer, I have no reason to doubt him either.

Anyone know whats up with the curt schilling thing?
How would Bethesda allow that elder scrolls developer to work on a similar project that would compete with Skyrim?
my guess is that it has to do with benji's and the ability to branch out creatively.
Also, here's about 20 minutes of footage from PAX East....
demo out now to download on xbox live. i havent played it yet, but the people i know who have are all about it.
marketplace -> games -> new releases = free demo download. apparently it's a pretty big demo.
Def not. And not even close really. I played the demo and it was ok, but I won't spend $60 on just ok.
It's kinda anime-ish.
downloaded the demo on steam, and the gameplay video just isn't there, the sound works, the cut-scenes work, the menu and minimap and on-screen alerts all work, but I'm otherwise blind.
anyone else try the demo on steam? did it work for you?
Anger With Game Content Lock Spurs Reaction From Studio Head Curt Shilling
"Studios and publishers are fighting back hard against the used game market, with the upcoming le Kingdoms of Amular the latest to declare it will use a content lock. In this case, KoA ups the ante by locking out part of the game that's normally available in single-player mode. Gamers exploded, with many angry that game content that had shipped on the physical disc was locked away and missing, as well as being angry at the fact that content was withheld from used game players. One forum thread asking if the studio fought back against allowing EA to lock the content went on for 49 pages before Curt Shilling, the head of 38 Studios, took to the forums himself. His commentary on the situation is blunt and to the point. 'This is not 38 trying to take more of your money, or EA in this case, this is us rewarding people for helping us! If you disagree due to methodology, ok, but that is our intent... companies are still trying to figure out how to receive dollars spent on games they make, when they are bought. Is that wrong? if so please tell me how.'"
