It also needed to be a high enough figure for the alleged victim to completely drop the case, thereby insuring that Bryant would not go to trial, and thus not go to jail.
With the DA in Colorado foaming at the mouth over this case, there was considerable pressure in the local community to pursue the case. This also drove the figure higher than it might have been if the DA's office were merely lukewarm about their chances. So the only way Bryant's attorneys felt that he would - with 100% certainty - not go to jail, was to pursue an out of court settlement.
There was no acquittal in Colorado because there was no trial.
