The 12 feet is from an interview with a source on Hawaii who said that the sea level station measured a 12 foot wave, but it wasn't confirmed by anyone on shore.
'Eh, if you're within 1000 miles you'd die from pneumonia as your lungs filled with blood from being sliced up by the shards of volcanic glass in the ash you'd be breathing, so you wouldn't have to worry about starvation.
