Thats the kind of thing you always see in big quakes. Its a load of energy being released.

The quake heavily damaged the generators that run the cooling in the plant, so they had to switch to battery backups, which are only built to last 8 hours. After that, you can't keep pumping + cooling the water into the reactor any longer, and it starts boiling the water away until the rods are exposed to air. When that happens, they start melting down. And that's bad. Like, really bad.
They need to form a really long chain of people with buckets...

SPOILER ALERT: JOKE WITH POOR TASTE COMING UP

... they have enough water at least.

6.9 aftershock??? This is just insane. Imagine the storm that would happen if this happened off the California coast?

So let me get this straight! Japan is a small country that is known to get so many earthquakes they actually created a monster called Godzilla to help explain to the children why the buildings were all smashed, and yet no one has the sense to move from there? I thought Asians were smarter than us.

Japan is still getting rocked with quakes pretty badly. There is a 6.6 happening there right now. God be with them..
    Where was the 6.6?

The 8.9 was 80 miles east of a city, several thousand feet under the ocean, and it did all that it did. If it was centered under a city....

My point is that the 6.6 could have been as damaging depending on location.

Probably some massive tectonic plate slippage. I wonder if we will get an update by satellite how much the earth moved?

Why does BBC say 20:41 at the bottom of the screen?
    Weird.
Probably using a 24hr clock. That would be 8:41 PM.

    Don't you know?

It's a sign of the end times.

Polluted waters, war in the middle east, volcanoes, earthquakes, global warming...

The date of the rapture is 5/21/11!

10.45pm GMT: Now there are reports from nuclear plant operator Tepco that the Fukushima No 2 plant has lost cooling to three of its reactors.

It was one reactor in the Fukushima No 1 plant that had been the cause for concern earlier
Reactor design makes a difference. Many newer designs can suffer catastrophic heat without the same environmental concerns.

The force of the quake was so strong that it moved the island of Honshu 8 feet to the east, said USGS geophysicist Ken Hudnut. It sped up the Earth's rotation by 1.6 microseconds, according to NASA.

1.6 microseconds may not seem like much, but for the mass of the earth... that's one of a lot of energy!

Now I'll bet that's a temporary change, because of the displaced sea water. It it is a permanent change, I'm not sure i understand the physics that would allow that without the earth shrinking a tiny bit.

I'm assuming that's 1.6 microseconds per day. It would take 1712 years for a second.

They did a pretty good job with the structural engineering. It's the tsunami that hurt them.
