I can sort of understand zero tolerance, when you don't know exactly what happened. It's easier to just suspend both parties involved in the fight. In this case however they knew based on the video exactly what happened.

Backstory to this: The larger kid had been getting bullied for a long time, and decided to end it. He was suspended from school, the child who threw the first (and second, third, and fourth) punches was not. Typical.

He has to get some form of punishment. You can't body slam a kid head first and not have a pretty serious punishment handed down, regardless of whether or not it was justified.

I'm sure he, his parents and his peers agree the 4 days off is worth it.

If someone starts punching you and you did not participate or did not provoke him then you can shoot him. Because he can knock you out and use your weapon against you. - Learned this on a CCW class.
Several factors should be considered of course like gravity of the situation and weight and height difference specially when lawyers (w/c is almost certain) are present.
