Here's some dirt of me giving advice:
I know your psych ruled out OCD, and by no means do I want you to think I'm trying to convince you that you have OCD, but the urge to take a deep breath acts very similar to an OCD compulsion.
During the act of that deep breath, your distracting yourself away from the distressing air hunger sensations, effectively telling your mind, "see. I can breathe deep. My breathing's okay." The anxiety subsides for a very brief time, maybe only 10 seconds, but's that enough reinforcement for you to want to repeat the compulsion. Then, your body gets used to this new breathing pattern, and the attempt to breathe slow and evenly through your nose, for even just a continuous minute, feels extremely uncomfortable.
I bet when you try to breathe through your nose continuously, it feels like you're not getting enough oxygen? So you have to convince yourself you are via the deep breath?
Terry, I can say this with absolute confidence. The first step to getting a hold of this, is the elimination of that "comforting" (I know it's not really comforting, but to the disorder, it is) deep breath every 20 seconds.
