From The Daily Six Shooter at PlaymakerOnline.com:

It’s a shame the Dallas Mavericks aren’t playing better. With the Lakers losing and Oklahoma City hot on their tail, instead of fretting over falling to the 4th seed in the Western Conference, they could be battling for that coveted #2 seed. Sadly, the Mavs struggles continued last night when Denver came into Dallas and pushed the team’s losing streak to four games. Not only has Dallas lost four in a row, they’ve lost nine straight to opponents that are currently in the playoffs.

It’s a disturbing trend made even worse by the fact that Tyson Chandler still isn’t back from injury and Jason Kidd took the night off to rest.

It certainly didn’t have to do with the way Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion or Jason Terry played. The three combined for 56 points on 60% shooting. But the rest of the team couldn’t help much on offense and that led to fast break points and more opportunities for the Nuggets in their victory.

While the losing streak started before Chandler went down with an injury, his addition will be big. He was a game-time decision last night and should be back for the Mavs game at home against the Clippers on Friday.

Dallas is only one game ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder as the #3 seed in the West with games against the Clippers, Suns, Rockets and Hornets to finish the season. Before you consider the benefits of falling to the 4th seed to avoid the Lakers in the 2nd round of the playoffs, consider that their first round opponent would be the Denver Nuggets who have lost consecutive games just once since the all star break. More than seeding, the Mavs should be worried about winning down the stretch.

Regression to the mean for an over-hyped soft team with a point differential less than 4 that were exposed when Dirk went down as having over-hyped depth and then the annointed savior of the day & Roddy B turned out to be just another quick erratic player and Terry is more mouth than substance and Marion is no Caron Butler. Moreover, Chandler has continued to be over-hyped [but is a poor shot blocker relatively speaking and rebounds at a younger age for the same minutes no better than an older Duncan - and Duncan not only is a better defender but will ramp it up when it counts. Without a MVP caliber season from Dirk] The Mavs they are in reality a 45-48 win team and their point differential is more consistent with what they are becoming a mid 50 win team or so.

Yes,I hope they get the 4th seed so we would have a second round more easy than if we face OKC.

I'm smelling upset no matter who Dallas plays in the 1st round if they keep playing like this.

In the last 4 playoff season, the Mavs are 10-17 in games and 1-4 in series, including losing as a #1 and #2 seed in the first round. Odds are in FAVOR they are bounced in the 1st again, regardless of who they play. That said, I sure hope they drop to 4 and win their 1st round series...

Much ado about nothing. yes, they are soft. but the Lakers just lost 3 straight. Miami lost at home to a playoff-less Bucks team, Celts have lost games they should not have ...

Mavs may not win more than a series if they do win one ...but this losing streak aint got to do with it. Losing Caron hurt big time, but they wasn't winning a le regardless ...

Mavs need a quality point guard and a shooting guard for that matter. They got neither and will lose in the first round. We screwed.

Now they have Kidd and Chandler sitting out against Denver. Dallas seems to be looking for that 4th slot for some reason.

I hope we draw for the Mavs tbh... I wouldn't want the Spurs facing OKC in a potential second round match-up.

LA losing some games doesn't equate to what Dallas is going through. The Celtics play in the Eastern Conference. If they played in the West, there's no way that they'd even get passed the 2nd round with how hurt and undersized they are.

Dallas played some really good basketball and were looking like solid contenders for a while after Caron Butler went down. Now, they're out of excuses.

OKC has the best chance of anyone in the West of defeating the Lakers imho. Especially is Westbrook defers more to Durant in the playoffs. Dallas could hope that happens and that they beat the Spurs.

Yeah cause Durant has Rons number and abuses him every time the teams meet.
