Shooting someone point blank with a mini gun or auto shotgun in the original Fallout was a thing of beauty.

Go to gog.com. Plenty of awesome, cheap PC RPG's there. I HIGHLY suggest Planescape: Torment. Other good RPGs are Baldur's Gate I and II, Arcanum, and Fallout 1 and 2.

Edit: Ah, just noticed you said console RPGs. Still, you should check out the PC ones.

And while it's not exactly SNES old, Xenogears is highly acclaimed.
+ >9,000 on Xenogears. I got the gf to start playing it a week or so ago, and she's hooked, even though RPGs aren't usually her thing. Its story alone is worth it, but for anyone who's thinking of playing it, Disc 2 is /insanely/ linear, which is a pretty common complaint about it. Didn't bother me, personally, but, eh, the story had me hooked.

I think I tried installing Fallout 1/2 on my old pc, and for some reason it didn't work. My new laptop has windows 7, am I gonna have to download some kind of simulator to help out? I remember I had to when I tried to play the first Red Alert.
Buy it from GoG, it should be good to go. If not, they can help you out. And I think the combo pack is only $10, well worth it.

Every suggestion here rules. But i have to add an additional positive comment for Earthbound. Very very under rated. Its an RPG set in normal times with things for weapons like baseball bats etc also has some pretty funny storyline parts. Great SNES RPG soundtrack, and can be somewhat difficult if you want to go at a fast pace. Highly recommend.

    Genesis or SNES?

Genesis version was epic. I can still hum the tune to all the bars in that game.

Going on an hour long voyage into the Matrix to steal a file just felt so good.

I caught them all once, then realized they were just going to keep making games and trying to make me do it over and over again.

Yeah, I brought the first sequel (Gold) and thought it was great too, but then afterwards it just got boring.

Morrowind got a HUGE graphical upgrade by a skilled mod team. I think someone mentioned here fairly recently.

Like many other Elder Scrolls fans, I loved The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind more than any other Western RPG, at least until Oblivion came out. I spent over a hundred hours in the game (I know that's not much compared to some of you, so feel free to heckle me in the comments below), although once I was finished, I was finished. This was because, sadly, I played the game on the Xbox, a system that didn't exactly lend itself to nifty feats of technical wizardry like modding. Luckily (for them at least), that wasn't the case for the game's PC players.

Now a group calling itself the "Morrowind Overhaul Team" has taken it upon themselves to find the best Morrowind mods from across the Internet, compiling them all in one handy package. Our sister site FilePlanet has the goods, so head on over to download the Morrowind Overhaul Mod now.

Looks pretty, no? Click the image above to start downloading the Morrowind Overhaul Mod.

On the Morrowind Overhaul Team's official forum, the group's leaders broke it down like this:

A benefit of this compilations is that players don't need to go through the "download every single mod out there and try it" phase of customizing Morrowind. The pack is intended for people who would prefer not to hand-pick mods out of the thousands of mods available. Modding Morrowind can be overwhelming for some people, and they might want to start out with a compilation before they feel comfortable picking and choosing mods on their own.

Hmm, I wonder if it might be time to start losing my life to Morrowind all over again?

I just beat Dragon Warrior on my Evo for the first time ever. Pretty hilarious. When I was young, the battery burned out as I got to the Dragon King.

I remember my dad buying Eye of the Beholder II for me when I was like 5. I can still remember never being able to get past an endless maze catacomb at the end of disc 1. There was some clue to get past it but I never was able to find or decipher it.

Nice posts! I still have Fallout 2, System Shock 2 and BG1&2, but there are so many others I've lost along the way. Definitely need to play Morrowind again.

Disagreed on 2 out of the three. I liked 8, /loved/ 9, and hate 7 with a passion that occasionally borders upon the omnicidal.

    Dragon Warrior was freakin' awesome.

I sometimes miss the old turn-based RPGs.

I never played 8 but I will agree that 7 has become overrated with time. I played it and 9 again not too long ago and I'd take 9 any day of the week now. Looking back I can understand why me as a high school freshman didn't mind all the emo angsty-ness of Cloud, even though it was just plain grating this time around.

how bout old non-turn based rpg's? might be considered more action adventure.

final fantasy adventures on gb was like that, original zelda...

any other recommendations? i think that's my all time favorite genre. i've just always sucked at the turn based combat, but i love the dungeon crawling, stats, exploration, items, upgrading aspects...
