i'm an RJ fan. He made a huge effort to rework his game in the offseason to fit this team. He's shooting much better from the 3 and playing much better defense.

But like Hill, he falls into lapses where he just constantly defers to the Big 3 and isn't aggressive enough to benefit the team.

It also doesn't help that he's replacing Bruce Bowen, one of the best defenders of all time. Still, I have faith in RJ that he'll come up big during the playoffs.
Exactly. He's the fourth option. And he realized that the best way to help the big 3 is to spread the floor. The chemistry and spacing he provides won't show up in the box score, but it's worlds apart from last year.

He needs to be more aggressive and drive more. Or he'll be the next Finley.

Nailed it. I want RJ to take it to the rack more. Just sitting out there chucking up 3s and routinely scoring 5 points per game aint cuttin it.

Jefferson played well first half of season, then he coasted the rest. At least, he's playing better latelly, in last 9 games: 52 fg% and 58% 3pt%, 11 ppg.

RJ could win Finals MVP and I would still think he's a turd. Why? Because he's been a pseudo superstar for years, and he's been playing below his ability since he arrived. Blame it on whatever.

For his contract, he should be doing what other players on the Spurs roster were doing when they were making that much. , even Hill can attack the rim and be aggressive. RJ isn't a 2nd or 3rd year player. With his athletic ability and experience, he should be destroying his defender, especially since he's a 4th option and never has the other team's best defender on him.

He used to attack the offensive glass and get put back dunks. When's the last time he's done that? Bonner has had offensive put back dunks since RJ has.

The spurs system does not allow him to score 18 to 20 pts a game like he was able to do for the Nets where he was the go to guy. And yes his contract may be a little high but blame you cant blame him for that. He is doing exactly what he is supposed to do in Pops eyes. the spurs have 61 wins! Would have 66 wins right now if Tim, Tony, and Manu didnt get hurt during that losing stretch. RJ is ok in my book.

Too inconsistent... that's the major issue with RJ... he can easily get lost in a sea of irrelevancy...

I have noticed RJ has been getting the ball on his cuts of late, TD especially has been using him, this has been working well and I think Pop is pushing this for the playoffs as its a play we haven't been using all season.

I don't know how many times that TP and RJ run the break together with RJ in a great spot to receive the pass but the exact time Tony needs to drop the pass off he pushes in with 2 defenders in front of him for a no score most of the time, with 1 defender in front TP is money but not 2.
Its like he doesn't even see RJ cos he is along side of him out wide to drive in with a better angle on the defenders. A pass first point Guard would find RJ every time, that would be 2-3+ times a game at least.

See Neal give him the alley today, that play should happen more when RJ follows. TP would just dribble that ball back out and setup the half court offense. Screw that Put it up for the big finish.

    ...After Saturday, Jefferson has tried a career-high 300 3-pointers this season, making a career-best 133.

That’s good for a 44.3-percent clip Jefferson never could have predicted in his greediest imagination.

“I can’t even try and be cool and say I knew I could do this,” Jefferson said.

If TP was a pass first PG, he wouldn't draw double coverage and RJ wouldn't be open. RJ isn't Amar'e, and there's only one Nash.

He's not doing what he's supposed to be doing. If he were, Tim wouldn't say "we expect more from him in the playoffs".

No team pays a guy that much and doesn't expect him to share the burden at, at least, one end of the floor. RJ defers to the bench to score when the big 3 are out or struggling. RJ's last 20pt game was in November.

    Sorry, that dog won't hunt.

    2. RJ hasn't completely quashed his tendencies towards passive play on offense and lazy lapses on defense. When the Big 3 went down, he should have been the one to step up in the Portland game. Instead he curled up into fetal position and it was left to the 9-12 guys on the bench to show leadership and hustle.

    This for me.

This. TP always chooses to go at the rim instead of passing, even if it's against 2-3 defenders.

I agree that a lot of the hating comes because he doesn't have the contract of a 5th option.
You all know Hill is the 4th option in this team, he is scoring more, assisting more and shooting more per game than RJ

Last year we were all upset with the play of RJ. The expectations were so high and he didn't even come close to delivering. Many people thought the biggest problem with Rj was his inability to hit the open 3pt shot.

Now we are here at the end of Rj's second year as a Spur and he has shot a shockingly high 44% from the 3pt line. It seems like someone who shoots 44% from three would have won the respect of Spurs fans on this board but it hasn't.
In fact at this moment there is a thread called "players you would rather have over RJ". If you look though the thread you will get some Star players(who should not be compared to Rj), shooting-guards(which also should not be compared to him), some smart ass comments (like "bag of rocks") and at last some comparable players which in many cases shoot less than 35% 3pt.

How could so many of you want players over Rj that shoot the three ball way worse than him? I thought the 3pt shot at the small-forward position was vital for this team to succeed.

Why do so many of you guys still dislike Rj?
I see you're a big rj fan Nathan.... Would you prefer him or Leonard ?

PATFO are partially to blame here. (1) Traded Bowen a year too early (2) Got handcuffed with RJ's massive salary (3) resigned Matt Bonner in 2010 for a multi-year deal (4) Signed Bogans to serve as the centerpiece in defense. Those were absolutely miserable times as a Spurs fan. It is as if PATFO went on vacation during 2009-2011
