    Edit: McDonald's piece:

    Popovich respects power of 3-pointer
    Jeff McDonald

Gregg Popovich hates the 3-point line
    By Eric Freeman
    Ball Don't Lie

In addition to being a great coach, Spurs head honcho Gregg Popovich is generally recognized as an old-school personality. Most modern-day coaches know how to play the media game, but Pop remains as gruff as possible. It's endearing, in its own way, and helps set him apart from the often too-slick world of NBA coaching.

Still, I don't think anyone thinks that Popovich is old-school enough to dislike an innovation as ingrained in the soul of today's NBA as the 3-point line. Except he does. From Jeff McDonald at Spurs Nation:

If the league rules committee would allow it, he would personally travel to every building from the Staples Center to Madison Square Garden and scrub the 3-point line off the court himself.

"I'm old-school, I wish there weren't any threes," Popovich said. "It would be more basketball-like to me."

Instead, each NBA gym comes equipped with an arc painted 23 feet, 9 inches from the basket at its apex, beckoning shooters to step right up and gamble for extra points.

This season, the 3-point shot has been uncommonly good to the Spurs, who have made 671 of them, shattering the franchise mark of 625 and sparking the most prolific offense of Popovich's 15 seasons.

If the 3 pointer didn't exist, Matt Bonner would not be in the NBA. True Story.

This just doesn't sound right coming from the coach of the league leaders in 3pt percentage.

Agree. Some shooters would not be phased, but Bonner psychologically needs that line there. I'm pretty sure about that.

I don't think it has anything to do with needing to have a line to shoot from, (obviously you were joking). Matt would be worthless without the bonus point.

I like the 3-point line. It makes end-of-game situations more intense/exciting. Otherwise, you'd have games where a team is down by 3 and hear commentary like '...he drives to the basket -and everyone just watches him, being sure to keep their distance.'

If there were no 3-point line, there would be a lot fewer dramatic late-game wins (and losses). With 82 games in the year, that would be kind of boring (I wouldn't mind seeing them cut the number of games per year, however; 60-65 with no back-to-backs would improve the product).

That's a much better article. A lot of good quotes in there. This team knows it cant rely on the 3 all playoff long.

Because even though he "hates" it, it is a part of the game and he will use it to his advantage. Much like "hack a shaq". He cares about winning.

The three point shot does take away a lot of the "execution" of basketball. 24 foot jumpshots wouldn't be taken as frequently if they were only worth 2 points. Teams would have to run an efficient offense to try to create higher percentage scoring opportunities. The paint would be a much more fun battleground to watch, as would the plays teams would have to run to get guys open.

    I'm with Pop.

Larry Brown said the same thing back in the day IIRC when they pushed the three point line way in and guys like Alonzo Mourning and Antoine Carr were jacking up 3s.
