Yes, an American Idol thread

For all you Casey fans, what is it about Casey that only the younger generation is suppose to get? I keep hearing that most people won't like his singing b/c they just don't get it. What is it that we don't get?

I'm 39 ... not exactly considered a part of a younger generation - at least according to my kids.

I like him because he's jazzy and quirky (and funny). I've spent a lot of time around jazz bands growing up, and actually in one for a very short period of time, so I'm inclined to like it. And he also reflects a lot of my personality. Although, I'm not a fan of the crying and drama and theatrics.

I don't think it's necessarily generational as much as personal preference in music genres.

It's funny that this is the perspective here now. When we were at the Top 24, most people were saying that it was the most talented group on AI in 10 years. (I don't know honestly...I never watched AI until this year.)

So, what happened? Are none of the finalists talented? Do the performances suck because of the "professionals" guiding them? Or do they not get better week-to-week because the judges 'love' every bad performance?

Kinda ..a little bit of all the above...

IMO it was a pretty talented group (compared to the last few seasons) and still has some talent.
The judges have never critiqued anyone...only praised them.

The INTERSCOPE records people--again IMO-- have brought the show down a notch or two by shamelessly trying to "mold" the contestants into what "they" believe will sell....maybe they are right in some way...but in doing so...it has changed the contestants from being who they are into trying to act the way they think will be more successful in the future $$$$...

Last but not least...keeping some less-talented people (paul) and getting rid of some better talent has watered down the performances somewhat...

I've watched most of the seasons, and this is the best group of singers I've ever heard. Simon isn't around to keep things cut and dry, imagine if he were around, I bet half of those who were in the Top 24 wouldn't have been there. I think Simon based his decisions on "how someone" looked. Just IMO.

I think a majority of it is the last reason you gave. We are seeing smug contestants that don't believe they need to change what they are doing, when (presumably) a lot of America thinks so. In past seasons, you didn't have contestants with heads this big already because of Simon. They would be forced to change it up because Simon would not let a contestant just cruise along doing the same thing every week, a la Scotty or Jacob.

I think the lack of critical judging has left America not really knowing who was good that night, and who wasn't. Therefore, it largely becomes a popularity contest; and as we see on this site, once you pick a favorite you kind of stick with them.

Also, when Simon was around, it seems like he made Randy a better judge. Now, Randy seems unsure of what to say because he doesn't know if someone will agree with him if he thought it was bad, so instead he just takes the safe route.

I don't think it's a younger thing either. I just like his style. His jazzy feel while still keeping true to some of the songs he sang appeals to me. It's just what I like to listen to. I've always been a classic rock guy, so James appeals to me a bit too (although admittedly I'm not a big fan of James).

I don't see what people see in Scotty either. He is a one-trick pony, and yet people still think he's great every week, while I disagree. He's boring and predictable to me. But I assume it's just the kind of music you like to hear. I wouldn't doubt that you enjoy country music. Country, for me, isn't my first choice in music.

Yeah, I read that a while back. Ever since I read it, I have noticed they do seem a bit friendly there. Although, it looks more like Casey is into her than she is into him.

2. Scotty- Good song choice and vocals!

3. Jacob- Another good consistant performance!

4. Lauren- I liked her performance but she still seems almost embarrassed up there.

5. Stefano- Started rough but ended up singing well the rest of the way.

6. James- Uhh......Noooooooo!!!!

7. Casey- Butchered a good Maroon 5 song! Mr. Weird Al Yankovic wannabe is up to trying gimmicks like kissing JLo. Unfortunately, the gimmicks might work!

Here is the Muse song originally. He did well. It's a relatively new song so I'm having a hard time liking his cover. It was a good performance so I'm having a hard time putting him in the bottom, but he he didn't kill it by any means.




I am so over country on AI. Scotty and Lauren can go. Like yesterday. The worst bit is that the country votes carry them until the finale and one of them will win. It'll be Casey and one of the two of them in the top two. book it.

I didn't love anyone this week, so this is my order of the lesser of evils:

1. Haley - I liked it, not bad. I love her hair.
2. James - Not a huge fan of screamers, but it was entertaining for sure
3. Casey - I like it when he does more jazz, this was pretty weird, even for me.
4. Lauren - I love Sarah Evans, so this was kinda "meh" for me
5. Jacob - I'm just not a fan of Gospel Opera, it all sounds the same to me
6. Scotty - He's too goofy for me to take seriously.
7. Stefano - Creeper, for sure. lol
