The Lakers and their fans would be making a mistake if they think Kobe and Pau scoring less than 20 points is somehow a sign of how good they are. They just earned a split with the absolute worst team in the western playoffs.

Historically, the statistics support your analysis, but as of right now, the Lakers aren't playing any better than us and certainly neither Kobe, Artest nor the Laker frontline is playing better than any of the Grizzlies. If the Lakers don't shape up (they might), even assuming they get past this round, they aren't going to win a championship. We are doing better right now with the Willis Reed triumph of Manu's return. Too bad for hardcore Laker fans. Their team is disappointing big time so far and COMPLETELY HEALTHY.

    Believe.
It's hard to say who's playing better unless you are head to head.

Exactly. I've watched probably 600 Laker games since Bryant has been in town, and the current version of the Lakers win despite Bryant, not because of him. The only offense he's running is the one that gets him his own shot. Why more people don't call him out on this is beyond me. it's like he has the entire sports universe blackmailed.

Look at Game 7 last year. He goes 6-24, yet they still win. The ridiculous thing is that Bryant still got all the glory. If Boston hadn't given away that game - or if Perk hadn't gotten injured - Bryant's performance that night would go down in history as the least clutch performance by a top banana. It still is, but because the NBA and ESPN still find it necessary to push him down our throats, the spin will be that he's a great player. Well, he's not. He's only as good as his supporting cast. If history has proven anything, it has proven this. He's been coattailing bigs his whole career.
    Agreed.

"I wanted it so, so bad," said Bryant, who now joins Laker great Magic Johnson with his fifth ring. "The more I tried to push, the more it kept getting away from me. I'm just glad that my teammates really got us back in the game."

Agree that Kobe needs bigs. I still think the Laker bigs, while definitely BIG, are highly overrated. I give the Lakers no more than a 15% chance of winning it all, if this continues. Kobe can't take over as a facilitator or scorer any more, or at least not to the same extent.

Beginning of the end for sure. Spurs have a longer shelf-life IMO since they are more of a team and have a lot of really promising talent in Hill, Neal, Splitter and Blair (if he can grow a couple of inches).

The Lakers are already in the WCF basically and the Spurs are on the verge of losing to the Lakers' Farm Team.

Wake us up when the Spurs finally get past round 2. It's been yeeeaaars.

No need to wake you. You guys are up in the middle of the night trolling the message boards of the small market teams making sure nobody dares say anything critical of your team.

    Who cares?
The Lakers won't make it to the finals and the Spurs biggest threat are Dallas

We can legitimately call the Lakers old from now until they become lottery bound, which is soon. You will see them break down, not improve from now until they are bounced from the playoffs in this or the next round. Cheers!
