Gas prices stayed down till Republicans took back control of congress. It appears voting Dem does cause cheaper gas.

Speculation during the war on terror drove gas prices immediately after 9/11 but Bush administration policies certainly didn't help....we simply waited too long to fund alternative solutions to our consumption problem....we've got to eliminate a huge chunk of our annual oil consumption or we are doomed economically and socially...

Nelson, other senators urge curb on oil speculators
By William E. Gibson, Washington Bureau
    March 17, 2011

Florida Senator Bill Nelson and a dozen of his colleagues urged federal officials on Thursday to use new regulations to curb speculators from driving up gas prices.

“Speculators are seizing on recent political turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East to drive energy prices to unwarranted levels,” the senators wrote to Gary Gensler, chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Joining Nelson on the letter were Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington; Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Al Franken, D-Minn., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.; Patty Murray, D-Washington; Robert Menendez, D-N.J., Mark Begich, D-Ark.; John D. Rockefeller, D-W.V.; Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.; Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Republicans were asked, but they declined to sign the letter, Nelson’s staff said.

Just how do you propose you make such changes? I'll bet the democrats didn't author a bill to do so now did they. I'll bet this is just for you Kool-Aid drinking spectators to cheer the democrats over. The only legal power thus far is to increase the current 6% of the margin required. Without new legislation, democrats are just blowing hot air up their voters skirts and ruffling your panties.

Senate Dems decry plans to gut oil speculation police

In a letter sent to Republican congressional leadership on Tuesday, 48 Senate Democrats criticized the large Republican cuts to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and clean energy investment in a time when oil market speculation is at record levels.

So funny how right-wing bubbas blame Barry and want him to do something about "free market" gasoline extortion, when the Repugs the bubbas keep re-electing kick them in the repeatedly.

If a Pres could do something about gasoline prices, that'd be the Hated Big Bad Government Intervening in the "free market".

An investigation into possible manipulation of gasoline prices has uncovered "disturbing'' revelations, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"There are a couple things that … are disturbing,'' Holder said, declining to elaborate.

He indicated the information would be reviewed by a fraud task force formed last week.
