Damn right Microsoft's ing right now. Just think of all the purchases people have made on XBOX Live in the past week and the zero purchases on PSN. I wonder how much money Sony has lost since the PSN shutdown? XBOX Live might cost money to use but when it comes to online content, it beats the out of PSN in my opinion.

It could easily happen to them too, it's not like they could do much if this or any other serious group chose to take them down.

I'd rather not pay and deal with this every once in a while, I just hate that I had to cancel my card and get a new one, which was painless anyways.

I just feel bad for the PS+ users that pay a fee to have rewards and such. Those people should get something free imho

Just to give some more insight on whats really happening though...

It appears a recently released custom firmware called Rebug may be the culprit.

It basically allows people to turn their PS3's into a dev console. A different group of users, supposedly not Anonymous, used the firmware to access the developer networks and found out that while using the dev kit, the PSN networks does not check on credit card info.... leading to large ammounts of piracy through PSN.....

This is supposedly the main reason they shut it down.

Im inclined to believe this scenario.... no way a crude DDoS that Anonymous would have done would have caused this extreme of an outage.

Yeah, but, but, Sony deserved it. In everyone's attempt to justify this as Sony "deserving it" they overlooked the fact that the users could be the ones that get ed, as we finally find out (officially) that credit card numbers and personal information was stolen.

Yeah, but, but, Sony deserved it. In everyone's attempt to justify this as Sony "deserving it" they overlooked the fact that the users could be the ones that get ed, as we finally find out (officially) that credit card numbers and personal information was stolen.

Sony deserves the class action lawsuit that's surely coming their way for failing to secure their network, period. If you're one of the suckers that deposited your info with them, then the responsibility is entirely yours.

This doesn't apply just to Sony. Anybody that knows their salt will tell you not to store purchasing information with any vendor. That goes for Apple, Amazon, etc. I personally use one time transactions declining the option to store my info or simply purchase and use gift certificates.

Guys, i just cancelled my credit card and I should be getting one in 5 or 7 days. Just wanted to know if the charges from the cancelled credit card automatically transfer towards the new credit card that im getting, anyone know?

I do something kinda similar to this. My direct deposit through work is linked to savings, not checking (don't own a credit card), and the debit card/checking account is set up so it won't allow overdrafts. If, God forbid, my debit card info got stolen, whoever did it has a whopping 5 dollars and change, to play with.

Because Sony didn't do due diligence and protect their network. Sony was f'ing stupid.

Them deserving of embarrassment doesn't mean people deserve to have their info stolen.

How would that have given them access to customer data though?

And if Sony is saying customer data got stolen as a smokescreen, then they're ing re ed. It would make MUCH more sense to accept the few pirates and try to track them down, then tell everyone that their info got stolen.

Is putting credit card info on PSN mandatory? I can't remember if I did, but I've never bought anything on PSN nor do I even use the gaming network.

I'm guessing if I did it was almost 2 years ago with an expired CC.

IIRC, and admittedly this was about 18 months ago for me, it wasn't mandatory. I believe it gives you the option to set up a default account for PSN purchases when you register but you can simply opt to set it up later. Was thinking about getting a couple of the PS1 classics for a change of pace over the summer. Gonna have to think long and hard about that now, that's for sure.
