A little over a month ago I noticed some charges on my credit card from Microsoft totaling around $400. I logged in to the Xbox website and found that I had apparently purchased an Xbox live family plan (for ~90 bucks) and and four different transactions for MS points (totaling ~300 bucks) which were immediately gifted to my "family members". I didn't even know such a plan existed. Needless to say, the people who received the points promptly left my "family". I received emails saying who I gifted points to, but after trying to look them up, they seemed like dummy accounts... no game history, etc.

After removing my credit card from Microsoft's system, changing my password, notifying my CC company and changing my CC number, I called Microsoft. The first girl I spoke to basically said I was SOL since the points were gone and presumably spent already, it was up to my bank to refund the money. After asking to speak to somebody else, the next guy was much more responsive and imediatly locked my Xbox Live account down and put it under investigation. While it took longer than he said (close to a month vs 7 days). They called me back with instructions on how to reclaim my account, and the 400 dollars was refunded to my card. They refused to give me any details (understandably) on who stole my money, saying that it is in law enforcement's hands now. They also gave me a 12-month Xbox live membership free.

I only really use my Xbox live account for Netflix and game updates. Rarely do I play online or interact with anybody else. So I'm still at a loss on how my password got leaked. If it was MS's fault to begin with, thanks for making it right. My credit card is going to stay away from them for now on though. The only other company that has my CC info on file is Netflix. I'm going to be more careful from now on.

Sounds awesome. But the free 1 year of gold isn't worth the thought of losing 400 bucks.

You only use your Xbox for Netflix? Why pay $60 for Live when you could use PSN for free and stream Netflix for free. And you don't have to worry about anyone hacking your account and stealing your credit info. Oh yeah.........nevermind.

Agreed. And my credit card company would've removed the charges, but it's just nice that MS did the right thing and refunded the money. The 12 months of gold is just bonus.

How my password got out is bothering me more than anything. As I said, I changed my CC number, and I've gone around and changed my online passwords for my CC, bank, etc.

I don't have a PS3. And I do use Netflix in other rooms of the house via my blu-ray player and Wii. But good question regardless. I used to game online often enough to justify it, but haven't in a long time. The 5 bucks a month isn't exactly breaking the bank either way though.

My credit card is one thing, but I never use my debit card online. Somebody could really me over if that was compromised.
