In February, when President Obama invited Russell to the White House to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, he could not help but ask a simple question: How was it possible that a city that had honored so many of its sports legends had yet to commemorate the legacy of one of its most transcendent ones?
“I hope that one day in the streets of Boston, children will look up at a statue built not only to Bill Russell the player, but Bill Russell the man,’’ Obama said.
The words will ring true.
The Celtics announced plans yesterday to build a statue of Russell, the player who not only helped bring 11 NBA les to Boston but also served as a symbol for the racial tension in the city during the civil rights movement and the progress ever since.
Young or old statue? They will be hard pressed to make it darker than him.![]()
Yeah, they just put up a statue of Orr last year. Wonder where they'll put the 11th ring?![]()
Russell gets way too much attention he doesn't deserve....He always got his ugly mug in the spot light trying to grab some attention...He's a crumb snatcher Lng....a crumb snatcher....![]()
He got the highest award a civilian can receive from the President... you saying Obama's wrong?![]()
I'm saying his 15 min are up already...I'm tired of seeing his face...with all that nappy grey beard he's starting to look like a black Osama...enough already....
Don't Russell and the city of Boston not like each other too much? I remember a quote of his where he said he never played for Boston; that he played for the Celtics.
A Canadian has a statue in the U.S?![]()

You win 11 championships in Boston, your 15 mins are never up. That's just how it goes. Boston is loyal to its sports heroes.
Edit: Unless you're Manny Ramirez, I guess. (I never got the demonization of him.)
Orr is revered in Boston. If you go to a sports bar in Boston, and it doesn't have the famous "Flying Orr" photo, just get up and leave for another sports bar.
I think his stance has changed over the years.
Kool demonstrating why he's a laughingstock in this thread. He was undoubtedly one of the people booing the defending champs last night.
Russell is one of the true legends and deserves this immensely. He's one of my favorite old-school players and personifies winning the right way.

Russell was a G... also a big voice in the racial integration of the game and part of the Civil Rights Movement.
all he did was dominate small white men....he's received many awards for his service...enough is enough...He's overrated much like Red was....
You are a ing idiot. Have fun watching the Lakers crash and burn, .![]()

Was Phil a GM too? I wasn't aware he made personnel decisions.
